America, Defender Of Democracy? Why The World (Still) Isn’t Buying It

Cambodia has been making headlines this year for all the wrong reasons: a rising Asian leader in “internet fraud,” “forced labor” and “human trafficking.”

But why, in particular, has Cambodia become a hub for online scams? How did international cyber fraud become so widespread in this Southeast Asian nation of 16.7. million? The answers begin with an unlikely source — land.

There is a joke familiar to many Cambodians: only generals with two stars or more can own land in Sihanoukville, a popular beachside destination in the south of the country. That land eventually changes hands and ends up belonging to Chinese investors, who turn it into hotels, casinos and, eventually now: cyber fraud activities.

Cambodia has private ownership of land, but its domestic politics has been turbulent for decades, with property rights still unclear. Large amounts of private land is still concentrated in the hands of the political elite through violent means, such as the forced conversion of private land into state land or the eviction of residents for commercial development.

In 2007, the government evicted long-time fishermen living in Sihanoukville, on the grounds of developing a public road, with 105 family houses burnt down by the police.

The seemingly unrelated factor of land is the basis for Cambodian becoming a hotbed of fraud in the virtual world. On July 15, the documentary Forced to Scam, released by Al Jazeera, revealed that the Special Economic Zone in Pursat province, in the west of the country, was in fact a cyber fraud park.

Often, these parks are in the form of offices that are leased to the owners of online gambling companies for rent and management fees. The “management fees” are collected by specialized properties, also known as zone managers. But law enforcement experts say the management cost is a protection fee charged by the landowners for providing political sanctuary to the companies.

As developing countries, Southeast Asian nations did not have the foundation of earlier Western countries that built national wealth through colonial advantages. Due to its disadvantaged position in the development of global capitalism, the Cambodian government has adopted “extractive” strategies to rapidly accumulate capital for national development, i.e. plundering and exploiting the country’s natural and land resources. But these strategies have created suffering too.

According to the World Bank, Cambodia’s economy has been growing at a rate of over 7% since 2011, thanks to its garment manufacturing and real estate sectors. But behind these gains lie a number of obvious disasters: forest destruction, drug and gun violence, and the proliferation internet scams.

Cambodia has now been ranked as the Southeast Asian country with the highest level of corruption for the fourth year in a row; it also has the highest rate of forest degradation over the last two decades, with vast areas of virgin forest destroyed by logging.

In the U.S. State Department’s latest Trafficking in Persons Report 2022, Cambodia was even downgraded from the original Tier 2 to Tier 3, highlighting the country’s extensive internet fraud parks and forced labor.

Cambodia’s complex political and economic structure has been shaped by the many changes of government and state institutions since the French colonization in 1863. After the formal independence of the Kingdom of Cambodia in 1953, the government was overthrown multiple times, notably with the Khmer Rouge communist regime from 1975 to 1979, the 1978–1989 Vietnam occupation, and the UN takeover from 1992 to 1993.

China has been the largest foreign aid donor to Cambodia since 2003.

It was not until 1998, when Hun Sen became the Prime Minister, that the political situation in Cambodia became more stable. Hun Sen used “democracy” as a cover to start moving towards a developmental authoritarian state, where one-party dominance and Hun Sen’s family patronage network provide an umbrella for corruption.

In terms of international relations, China has been the largest foreign aid donor to Cambodia since 2003, and the Sino-Cambodian alliance has gradually become a shield for Cambodia in the face of international democratic forces.

During the UN takeover, the West hoped that foreign aid would be used to boost Cambodia’s economic growth, thereby achieving social stability and, by doing so, promote Cambodia’s political democratization. But with the development of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and continued investment from Beijing, Cambodia’s dependence on the West has gradually diminished, providing a backstop to Hun Sen’s authoritarian rule.

The Belt and Road Initiative has not only brought Chinese capital to Cambodia, but also unsavory industries such as prostitution, gambling and drugs. Although naturally not planned developments under the initiative, they have attracted countless Chinese investors and speculators who have taken advantage of the opportunity to head overseas.

Under China’s harsh policies against such industries in the last decade, the organizers have been moving to Southeast Asia, such as Manila in the Philippines, Sihanoukville in Cambodia, and Myawaddy in Myanmar.

In 2019, there were 91 casinos with legal licenses in Sihanoukville, most run by Chinese. In addition, clubs in the city offer sex and drug services with the help of Cambodian officials. These establishments are sheltered by Cambodian officials in the form of shares, and they employ armed Cambodian gendarmes as security personnel.

With Cambodia’s only deep-water port, Sihanoukville is also a key development target of China’s Belt and Road project. Led by Cambodia’s pursuit for rapid economic growth and Chinese investment, Sihanoukville has grown from a small fishing village in a seaside port to become the third largest city in the country.

From the end of 2017 to mid-2019, Sihanoukville got the reputation of “gambling town” with a rumored “300,000 online gamblers,” and the sector relying on local protection forces to spread across Cambodia.

Many believe that Cambodia’s cyber fraud industry has evolved out of the legitimate gambling industry. In fact, the popular real estate investment, casino and online fraud industries have been developing in parallel. But problems mushroomed after the 2019 “818 Gambling Ban,” which required online gambling companies to leave Cambodia. Following the ban, a large number of online gambling companies began to move to places such as Myanmar, Dubai and Georgia.

The 818 gambling ban not only caused a mass exodus of legal online gambling companies, but also brought about another serious evil. The real estate investments, casinos, clubs, supermarkets and restaurants that grew up around the industry were all devastated, leaving countless investors broke and workers in Sihanoukville out of a job.

Many from Hong Kong and Taiwan came to Cambodia, trapped in cyber fraud activities.

Internet gamblers fled, investors lost money, businesses closed, casinos laid off staff – Sihanoukville’s economy came to a standstill overnight. This was the beginning of Sihanoukville’s descent into a Wild West. The city is home to many gangsters who rely on gamblers for their livelihood and have expert kidnapping techniques, so they formed professional gangs to kidnap Chinese people inside Cambodia and sell them to online fraud outlets. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cost of selling people has risen in tandem with the cost of smuggling, recently hitting around $25,000.

As for business, due to China’s ongoing operations against illegal industries, anti-fraud propaganda and other policies, online gambling companies’ profits in mainland China were limited. In 2020, following the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, the Chinese government tightened its immigration policies.

As the online gambling and fraud industry is dominated by the Chinese population, China’s measures to restrict external mobilization have deprived them of a large part of their labor pool. Coupled with the rise of international fraud, they began to look for labor from other countries and to attract overseas workers with high pay.

This is how so many people from Hong Kong and Taiwan wound up coming to Cambodia, trapped in cyber fraud activities.

Countries and regions where online gambling companies congregate, such as the Philippines and Cambodia, are among the poorest regions in the world and attract desperate speculators. The nations themselves are eager to develop their economies and tackle poverty, and therefore accumulate national wealth by extracting domestic resources whatever ways possible.

Former president of Philippines Rodrigo Duterte, for example, has refused the Chinese government’s request to cancel online gambling licenses, citing the need to feed the people. Cambodia’s gambling ban in 2019, passed in exchange for free aid from China, has ultimately pushed organizations to operate covertly throughout Cambodia.

With Cambodian officials denying the existence of online gambling parks in Cambodia, these fraudulent companies have become even more brazen in human trafficking and abuse.

Why are online fraud companies alive and well? As well as being protected by developing countries, they draw in all kinds of people and industries to serve them. Multinational money laundering organizations transfer money for them. Information sellers continue to provide them with personal information and privacy from all over the world. Snakeheads (Chinese gangs) around the world secretly send them employees of different nationalities. Travel agencies provide them with visas and booking services.

It’s truly a global industry with global impact, but nowhere does it run deeper than in Cambodia.

The scope of problems with the chain of command and logistics, scant air support and poor morale indicates that Russian planning and preparations for the war were seriously flawed and misguided.

On the level of doctrine, the assertion of Russia’s ability to deter North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), defined as the main adversary, by employing the complete set of nuclear, conventional and “hybrid” capabilities, laid the foundation for the failure of attack on what was presumed to be a frangible Ukraine. Strategic guidelines on gaining a quick and complete victory by establishing air dominance and executing offensive maneuvers by armored battalion tactical groups (BTGs), led to the confusion of poorly coordinated attacks without proper air support. The strategic culture, pro-forma conservative but distorted by bureaucratic sycophancy and corruption, produced inflexible chains of command, demoralization of poorly led combat units and ugly atrocities.

The sum total of these flaws is too high for the Russian army to learn useful lessons in the six months of fighting, so it has fallen back on the old pattern of positional warfare based on destroying the enemy by heavy artillery fire. The strategy of protracted war of attrition can lead to victory only if the economy and society are mobilized fully for delivering the necessary resources to the fighting army, but such mobilization—while proceeding in defiant Ukraine—remains politically impossible in discontented, isolated and economically degraded Russia.

Putin really could fall — but will that help the West as much as we think?

The disarray and likely collapse of Vladimir Putin’s effort to mobilize 300,000 conscripts to fight in Ukraine suggests that his iron grip on power could someday soon be broken as quickly and surprisingly as the czar’s grip was broken in 1917 and the grip of Soviet totalitarianism was broken in 1990. But with what consequences?

A hundred years of Russian experiences with overthrowing autocracy suggest only another turn in a depressing cycle. Americans tried but failed to arrest that cycle when U.S. troops actually invaded to support anti-Bolshevik White Russians in the 1920s and when free-market evangelists in the 1990s put their dirty fingers into the Russian economy, only to wind up getting burned. 

In “The Unconquerable World: Power, Nonviolence, and the Will of the People,” Jonathan Schell reminded us that revolutionary Bolsheviks were surprised that the imperial regime fell quickly and with little bloodshed. Between 1989 and 1991, most Russians and Westerners were equally surprised by the speed with which the supposedly impregnable Soviet Union lost its grip on Eastern Europe and on Russia itself, vanishing almost as if in a puff of smoke. The reason is that autocracies that are run mostly on fear — on domestic terror — drain their people of the spontaneous energy and comity, or love, that can sustain a healthy society. So those societies fail. And if their public’s fear is displaced by contempt, they unravel.  

Huge upheavals in technology, economics, communications, migrations and demographics over these past hundred years have exposed the bankruptcy of fear as a social glue and have weakened the grip of old-style authoritarianism. But the new technologies and other arrangements have also intensified top-down surveillance, indoctrination and control in increasingly subtle and even seductive ways in the hands of rulers in Hungary, Singapore, Turkey and other countries whose elites are more imaginative than Czar Nicholas II or Joseph Stalin and their legatees. Putin, who spent his childhood under Stalin and his formative years in the KGB, is almost a throwback to the old authoritarianism, and has not seemed to master the new authoritarianism’s greater subtlety and intimacy. Watch this three-minute video of Putin entering the Kremlin, which I posted here in Salon with another warning about him a few months ago. Notice the cartoonish postures of his guards and the obsequious deference of the nomenklatura, receiving him in ways that suggest that Putin’s curse may truly be Russia’s. For better or worse, Russian civil society has never had anything like America’s libertarian-individualist strain or its civic-republican ethos.

But are those differences really to the West’s advantage? Right now, American libertarian individualism and civic-republican cooperation are undergoing disturbing, funhouse-mirror distortions at the hands of Donald Trump, a professed admirer of Putin’s “genius.” Trumpism carries dangers that are metastasizing not only in America but also in Marine Le Pen’s France, Giorgia Meloni’s Italy and elsewhere in Western Europe.

The irony is that while Putin’s vulgar authoritarianism may be weakening in Russia, with unpredictable consequences, a new authoritarianism is rising among tens of millions of citizens in Western democracies who demand to be lied to and recruited by myths as simplistic as Putin’s, myths that tell them whom to scapegoat for their stress and dispossession and whom to follow to “fix it.”

The demagoguery of Trump and his Fox News heralds is more a symptom of this spreading virus than the main cause of our crisis. That cause is partly conspiratorial and malevolent, but often it’s just mindless: Americans (and other Westerners) have been increasingly stressed and dispossessed in recent decades by the frantic financialization and consumerization of civil society. It’s groping and goosing us 24/7, bypassing our minds and hearts on its way to our lower viscera and our wallets by titillating us, intimidating us, tracking us, indebting us and leaving us enmeshed in a spider’s web of commercial come-ons and pressures.

Unlike Putin, Donald Trump is both a product and an accelerant of that social malady. Putin has his oligarchs and his rubber-stamp parliament, but he hasn’t mastered the new autocrats’ learning curve, which may be transforming the West even as he clings to the weakest elements of Russia’s old authoritarianism: a society running on fear more than on love.

Trump family business fraud trial opens

New York (AFP) – The trial of Donald Trump’s family business on fraud and tax evasion charges began in New York on Monday, with the former US president immediately dismissing as it as a political stunt.

Manhattan prosecutors have charged the Trump Organization, currently run by Trump’s two adult sons, Donald Jr and Eric Trump, with hiding compensation it paid to top executives between 2005 and 2021.

Trump, who is not named in the case, slammed the charges as a “witch hunt” by rivals, weeks ahead of congressional elections on November 8.

“The highly partisan Democrat Witch Hunt goes on, this time in New York… right during the important Mid-Term Elections, of course,” he said on social media.

The company faces potential fines of over $1.5 million if found guilty.

One of the implicated executives, longtime CFO Allen Weisselberg, has already pleaded guilty to 15 counts of tax fraud, and is expected to testify against his former company as part of a plea bargain.

A close friend of the Trump family, the 75-year-old Weisselberg admitted he schemed with the company to receive undeclared benefits such as a rent-free apartment in a posh Manhattan neighborhood, luxury cars for him and his wife and private school tuition for his grandchildren.

According to his plea deal, Weisselberg has agreed to pay nearly $2 million in fines and penalties and complete a five-month prison sentence in exchange for testimony during the trial, for which jury selection began Monday.

“This plea agreement directly implicates the Trump Organization in a wide range of criminal activity and requires Weisselberg to provide invaluable testimony in the upcoming trial against the corporation,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in August.

Weisselberg has so far refused to give testimony directly implicating the former president in the scheme.

Multiple legal cases

Two subsidiaries of the Trump family’s sprawling real estate, golf and hospitality business are targeted by the suits.

While Donald Trump is not named in this case, he is facing charges along with three of his eldest children in a civil investigation led by New York’s attorney general, Leticia James.

James, a Democrat, has accused the family of purposefully inflating and deflating the value of their properties to avoid tax liabilities and to get more favorable loan and insurance deals.

Her office is seeking $250 million in fines against the former president, and that his family be barred from conducting business in the state.

The suit also calls for three of Trump’s children — Donald Jr, Eric and Ivanka — to be barred from purchasing real estate in New York for five years.

The 76-year-old Trump, who has heavily hinted but not yet announced a 2024 White House run, is also facing legal action on several other fronts.

He is at the center of a Justice Department investigation into the handling of highly classified documents, which the FBI seized from his Florida home in a raid, as well as multiple state and federal probes into his involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

The congressional committee investigating the Capitol riot has issued a subpoena requiring him to submit documents by November 4 and give sworn testimony by mid-November.

Without confirming that Trump had received the subpoena, his lawyer David Warrington has said his team would “review and analyze” the document and “respond as appropriate to this unprecedented action.”

Trump’s compliance would mean testifying under oath.

If he refuses, the House of Representatives can hold him in criminal contempt in a vote recommending him for prosecution.

The Origins of Covid-19 Are More Complicated Than Once Thought

In October 2014, virologist Edward Holmes took a tour of the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, a once relatively overlooked city of about 11 million people in the central Chinese province of Hubei. The market would have presented a bewildering environment for the uninitiated: rows of stalls selling unfamiliar creatures for food, both dead and alive; cages holding hog badgers and Siberian weasels, Malayan porcupines and masked palm civets. In the southwest corner of the market, Holmes found a stall selling raccoon dogs, stacked in a cage on top of another housing a species of bird he didn’t recognize. He paused to take a photo.

Eight years on, that photo is a key piece of evidence in the painstaking effort to trace the coronavirus pandemic back to its origins. Of course, it’s been suspected since the early days of the pandemic—since before it was even a pandemic—that the Wuhan wet market played a role, but it’s been difficult to prove it definitively. In the meantime, other origin theories have flowered centered on the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a biological research lab which, it’s argued, accidentally or deliberately unleashed the virus on the city and the world.

The overwhelming scientific consensus is that Covid originated in a similar way to related diseases such as SARS, which jumped from bats to humans via an intermediate animal. Figuring out exactly what happened with Covid-19 could prove immensely valuable both in terms of finally disproving the lab leak theory and by providing a source of information on how to stop the next pandemic. “This is not about placing blame,” says Kristian Andersen, a professor of immunology and microbiology at the Scripps Research Institute in California. “This is about understanding in as much detail as we can the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

For the last two years, an international team of scientists including Andersen and Holmes has been trying to pinpoint the epicenter of the pandemic, using methods ranging from genetic analysis to social media scraping. Their research, which attracted widespread coverage in preprint before being published in its final form last week, reads as much like a detective report as an academic study.

First: the scene of the crime. Where exactly in this city of 11 million people did the virus first jump from animals to humans? To find out, the team—led by University of Arizona biologist Michael Worobey—scoured a report published by the World Health Organization in the summer of 2021, which was based on a joint investigation the public health body conducted with Chinese scientists. By cross-referencing the different maps and tables within the report, the researchers obtained coordinates for 155 of the earliest Covid cases in Wuhan, people who were hospitalized from the disease in December 2019.

Most of those cases were clustered around central Wuhan, particularly on the west bank of the Yangtze river—the same area as the Huanan market. “There was this extraordinary pattern where the highest density of cases was both extremely near to and very centered on the market,” says Worobey, lead author on the paper, which was published in Science. Statistical analysis confirmed that it was “extremely unlikely” that the pattern of cases seen in the early days of the pandemic would have been so clustered on the market if Covid had originated anywhere else: A random selection of similar people from around Wuhan were very unlikely to have lived so close to the market.

Even early patients who didn’t work or shop at the market were more likely to live close to it. “This is an indication that the virus started spreading in people who worked at the market, but then started to spread into the local community, as vendors went to local shops, infected people who worked in those shops, and then local community members not linked to the market started getting infected,” says Worobey.

Controversial new research suggests SARS-CoV-2 bears signs of genetic engineering

A string of about 30,000 genetic letters were all that it took to start the nightmare of covid-19, the death toll from which is likely to be more than 20m. Exactly how this story began has been hotly contested. Many think that covid-19’s emergence was a zoonosis—a spillover, as so many new pathogens are, from wild animals, for it resembles a group of coronaviruses found in bats. Others have pointed to the enthusiastic coronavirus engineering going on in laboratories around the world, but particularly in Wuhan—the Chinese city where the virus was first identified. In February 2021 a team of scientists assembled by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to visit Wuhan said a laboratory leak was extremely unlikely. However, this conclusion was subsequently challenged by the WHO’s boss, who said ruling out this theory was premature.

Two recent publications appear to have bolstered the case for a natural origin connected to a “wet market” in Wuhan. These markets sell live animals, often housed in poor conditions, and are known to be sites where new pathogens jump from animal to human. Early cases of covid-19 clustered around this market. But critics counter that there are so many missing data about the epidemic’s initial days that this portrait may be inaccurate.

The opposing idea of a leak from a laboratory is not implausible. The accidental escape of viruses from labs is more common than many people realise. The flu epidemic of 1977 is thought to have started this way. But an escaped virus does not imply an engineered virus. Virology labs are also full of the unengineered sort.

Research such as that done in Wuhan offers a number of ways for a virus to leak out. A researcher on a field trip could have picked it up in the wild and then returned to Wuhan, and so spread it to others there. Or someone might have been infected with a wild-collected virus in the laboratory itself. But some argue that sarscov-2 could have been assembled in a laboratory from other viruses that were already to hand, and then leaked out.

Into this fray comes an analysis from an unlikely source. Alex Washburne is a mathematical biologist who runs Selva, a small startup in microbiome science based in New York. He is an outsider, although he has worked in the past on virological modelling as a researcher at Montana State University. For this study, Dr Washburne collaborated with two other scientists. One is Antonius VanDongen, an associate professor of pharmacology at Duke University, in North Carolina. The other, Valentin Bruttel, is a molecular immunologist at the University of Würzburg, Germany. Dr Washburne and Dr VanDongen have been active proponents of an investigation into the lab-leak theory.

The trio base their claim on a novel method of detecting plausibly lab-engineered viruses. Their analysis, published on October 20th on bioRxiv, a preprint server, suggests sarscov-2 has some genomic features that they say would appear if the virus had been stitched together by some form of genetic engineering. By examining how many of these putative stitching sites sarscov-2 has, and how relatively short these pieces are, they attempt to assess how much the virus resembles others found in nature.

They start from the presumption that creating a genome as long as that of sarscov-2 would mean combining shorter fragments of existing viruses together. For a coronavirus genome assembly they say an ideal arrangement would be to use between five and eight fragments, all under 8,000 letters long. Such fragments are created using restriction enzymes. These are molecular scissors which cut genomic material at particular sequences of genetic letters. If a genome does not have such restriction sites in opportune places, researchers typically create new ones of their own.

They argue that the distribution of restriction sites for two popular restriction enzymes—BsaI and BsmBI—are “anomalous” in the sarscov-2 genome. And the length of the longest fragment is far shorter than would be expected. They determined this by taking 70 disparate coronavirus genomes (not including sarscov-2) and cutting them into pieces with 214 commonly used restriction enzymes. From the resulting collection, they were able to work out the expected lengths of fragments when coronaviruses are cut into varying numbers of pieces.

The paper, which as a preprint has received no formal peer review, and which has not been accepted for publication in a journal, will be picked apart in the coming days—as well it should be, for this is the way that science works. Early reactions, though, have been deeply divided. Francois Balloux, a professor of computational systems biology at University College London, said he found the results intriguing. “Contrary to many of my colleagues, I couldn’t identify any fatal flaw in the reasoning and methodology. The distribution of BsaI/BsmBI restriction sites in sarscov-2 is atypical”. Dr Balloux said these needed to be assessed in good faith. But Edward Holmes, an evolutionary biologist and virologist at the University of Sydney, said that every one of the features identified by the paper was natural and already found in other bat viruses. If someone were engineering a virus they would undoubtedly introduce some new ones. He added, “there are a whole range of technical reasons why this is complete nonsense.”

Sylvestre Marillonnet, an expert in synthetic biology at the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry, in Germany, agreed that the number and distribution of these restriction sites did not look quite random, and that the number of silent mutations found in these sites did suggest that sarscov-2 might have been engineered. (Silent mutations are a result of engineers wanting to make changes in a sequence of genetic material without making changes to the proteins encoded by that sequence.) But Dr Marillonnet also said that there are arguments against this hypothesis. One of them is the tiny length of one of the six fragments, something that “does not seem logical to me”.

The other point Dr Marillonnet makes is that it is not necessary for the restriction sites to have been present in the final sequence. “Why would people introduce and leave sites in the genome when it is not needed?” he wondered. Previous arguments in support of the possibility of a lab leak have stressed that a manipulated virus would not need to have any such tell-tales. However, Justin Kinney, a professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, in New York, said that researchers have created coronaviruses before and left such sites in the genome. He said the genetic signature indicates a virus ready for further experiments and said it needed to be taken seriously, but warned the paper needed rigorous peer review.

Erik van Nimwegen, from the University of Basel, says there are only small scraps of information and it is “hard to pull anything definitive out of that”. He adds, “one cannot really exclude at all that such a constellation of sites may have occurred by chance”. The authors of the paper concede this is the case. Kristian Andersen, a professor of immunology and microbiology, at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, described the pattern, on Twitter, as “random noise”.

Any conclusion that sarscov-2 was engineered will be hotly contested. China denies the virus came from a Chinese lab, and has asked for investigations into whether it may have originated in America. Dr Washburne and his colleagues say their predictions are testable. If a progenitor genome to sarscov-2 is found in the wild with restriction sites that are the same, or intermediate, it would raise the chances that this pattern evolved by chance.

Any widely supported conclusion that the virus was genetically engineered would have profound ramifications, both political and scientific. It would put in a new light the behaviour of the Chinese government in the early days of the outbreak, particularly its reluctance to share epidemiological data from those days. It would also raise questions about what was known, when, and by whom about the presumably accidental escape of an engineered virus. For now, this is a first draft of science, and needs to be treated as such. But the scrutineers are already at work.

Endonuclease fingerprint indicates a synthetic origin of SARS-CoV-2

To prevent future pandemics, it is important that we understand whether SARS-CoV-2 spilled over directly from animals to people, or indirectly in a laboratory accident. The genome of SARS-COV-2 contains a peculiar pattern of unique restriction endonuclease recognition sites allowing efficient dis- and re-assembly of the viral genome characteristic of synthetic viruses. Here, we report the likelihood of observing such a pattern in coronaviruses with no history of bioengineering. We find that SARS-CoV-2 is an anomaly, more likely a product of synthetic genome assembly than natural evolution. The restriction map of SARS-CoV-2 is consistent with many previously reported synthetic coronavirus genomes, meets all the criteria required for an efficient reverse genetic system, differs from closest relatives by a significantly higher rate of synonymous mutations in these synthetic-looking recognitions sites, and has a synthetic fingerprint unlikely to have evolved from its close relatives. We report a high likelihood that SARS-CoV-2 may have originated as an infectious clone assembled in vitro.

Detection of SARS-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in SARS-CoV-2-unexposed donors has been explained by the presence of T cells primed by other coronaviruses. However, based on the relative high frequency and prevalence of cross-reactive T cells, we hypothesized CMV may induce these cross-reactive T cells. Stimulation of pre-pandemic cryo-preserved PBMCs with SARS-CoV-2 peptides revealed that frequencies of SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells were higher in CMV-seropositive donors. Characterization of these T cells demonstrated that membrane-specific CD4+ and spike-specific CD8+ T cells originate from cross-reactive CMV-specific T cells. Spike-specific CD8+ T cells recognize SARS-CoV-2 spike peptide FVSNGTHWF (FVS) and dissimilar CMV pp65 peptide IPSINVHHY (IPS) presented by HLA-B*35:01. These dual IPS/FVS-reactive CD8+ T cells were found in multiple donors as well as severe COVID-19 patients and shared a common T cell receptor (TCR), illustrating that IPS/FVS-cross-reactivity is caused by a public TCR. In conclusion, CMV-specific T cells cross-react with SARS-CoV-2, despite low sequence homology between the two viruses, and may contribute to the pre-existing immunity against SARS-CoV-2.

Scientists in furious row over ‘lab-made Covid’ claims

Viscount Matt Ridley, who co-authored a book on the origin of the coronavirus, called the new work a “hugely important study”.

“Evidence that strongly suggests SARS-CoV-2 was engineered may have been hiding in plain sight all along,” he said.

Prof Francois Balloux, the director of the UCL Genetics Institute, said it was “the strongest piece of evidence to date against a simple scenario of strict zoonotic origin for SARS-CoV-2”.

‘Highly misleading’

But prominent academics have rubbished the findings, claiming it was a “self-fulfilling prophecy” and the findings are “highly misleading”.

Critics say the signals the authors claim to be evidence of a lab origin are not a smoking gun because these genetic fingerprints are naturally found in many viruses, including the common cold.

Prof Stuart Neil, a professor of virology at King’s College London (KCL), accused the team of “stacking the deck” by cherry-picking their analysis and turning their paper into a “self-fulfilling prophecy”.

“It is confected nonsense put out to create a splash of controversy and become a talking point in the US and UK media,” he told The Telegraph.

Prof David Robertson, head of viral genomics at the Centre for Virus Research at the University of Glasgow, said paper was “nonsense” and “highly misleading”.

‘Poppycock dressed up as science’

Prof Kristian Andersen, evolutionary biologist and professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the Scripps Research Institute, called the work “nothing more than poppycock dressed up as science”.

“In plain language – this is uninformed nonsense and it’s simply not worth engaging with this b*******,” Prof Anderson said. 

The academic also said the paper is “so deeply flawed that it wouldn’t pass kindergarten molecular biology”.

The pre-print claims to have found telltale signs that the coronavirus was sliced up in a lab and stitched back together again, leaving behind “a very subtle but identifiable fingerprint”.

The team believe they have spotted “sticky ends” on the end of DNA fragments that have been moved around using enzymes. 

‘It makes a caricature of the whole situation’

But Dr David LV Bauer, a group leader at The Francis Crick Institute and expert in RNA virus replication, said this is impossible.

“Imagine that you’ve seen a train pulling into a station. They are identifying that they see the little couplers linking the carriages together. That’s what they claim to see,” he told the Telegraph. 

“What they’ve misunderstood is that the Golden Gate system is like the fancy new trains on the Elizabeth Line which don’t have any visible couplers.”

The analysis of the paper is also guilty of selective data interpretation, according to Dr Bauer, who says the authors “fixed” various aspects deliberately to only get the results they wanted and the findings will be unlikely to pass through peer-review.

“The result of the analysis has been constrained in such a way that they only ever see an outcome that they want and also there are all the red flags about how they don’t understand how this actually works,” he told The Telegraph.

“The problem with this kind of stuff is that it is perfectly legitimate to ask whether [Covid] came from a lab, whether it was tracked in or out on somebody’s shoe or whether it was engineered. These are perfectly legitimate questions to ask.

“But at the end of the day when you then put out this kind of stuff it just makes a caricature of the whole situation. It makes it really difficult to have any kind of reasonable discourse.”

‘Tinfoil hat bonkers’

Dr Benjamin Neuman, professor of biology at Texas A&M University, said the study “is the molecular equivalent of phrenology or numerology” and “tinfoil hat bonkers”.

“It’s about as illuminating an approach as converting the genome to digits, adding up the digits, and comparing that to the ‘number of the Beast’,” he said.

“The neatest thing is – look at the affiliations. We have someone who works at a gynaecology clinic, a business management efficiency analyst, and an Alzheimer’s researcher. As far as I can tell, none of these has ever worked with a virus before now, or studied virology, or been on a virology paper of any kind.”

Russia recent strikes target Ukrainian ‘points of pride’, says expert

NATO defence ministers took stock on Wednesday of its supply effort to war-torn Ukraine to date and debated ways to encourage the defence industry to ramp up production in short order.

The US-led 30-nation military alliance has been treading a fine line since Moscow’s full-scale invasion began, providing only non-lethal support and defending its own territory to avoid being dragged into a wider war with a nuclear-armed Russia.

Yet individual allies continue to pour in weapons and ammunition, including armoured vehicles and air defence or anti-tank systems.

Speaking to Euronews, Dr Patrick Bury, a senior lecturer in security at the University of Bath, said, “I think that both sides are essentially trying to find pressure points on each other and are then succeeding in doing so.”

“If you look at the Kerch bridge attack, which preceded the Russian bombardment of Ukraine and the other cities, it obviously had its military objectives trying to cut or at least slow down logistic supplies to the forces, especially in the Kherson region of occupied Ukraine,” Dr Bury said.

“I think the response, and, what we were expecting actually from the Russians for a while, had been increased attacks on critical national infrastructure using missiles.”

Nuclear arms threats and attacks against civilians spike

Allies are also training Ukrainian troops, building on the lessons NATO has taught Ukraine’s military instructors since Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014.

At the same time, national military stocks and arsenals are being depleted.

Some countries are growing reluctant to provide Ukraine with more weapons when they are no longer entirely sure that they can protect their own territories and airspace.

However, following the gains Ukraine’s counteroffensive has made on the eastern frontline and the failed annexation of four occupied territories, the war has entered a new stage.

“In response to the Kerch bridge attacks, Putin would have felt a lot of damage to his personal prestige and pride, and so, some of the targets selected in that latest bombardment were also cultural ones that Ukraine would feel hurt by in a similar way,” Dr Bury, who is also a former NATO research analyst, added.

Putin’s attack on a sovereign country without provocation and his threats to use nuclear weapons to defend seized territory have made many allies neighbouring Russia and Ukraine further concerned.

The United States and its partners want to boost weapons production by sending clear signals to the industry as they pool resources and deliver Ukraine the hardware that it needs, all while ensuring that no major gaps appear in national stockpiles.

“Ukraine is a big country, with many cities. So we need to scale up to be able to help Ukraine defend even more cities and more territory against horrific Russian attacks against their civilian populations,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday.

Stoltenberg said that following the apparent sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines between Russia and Germany, NATO has “doubled our presence in the Baltic and North Seas to over 30 ships, supported by maritime patrol aircraft and undersea capabilities.”
