Tens of thousands took to the streets of Manhattan Saturday as part of a nationwide coordinated “Hands Off” protest against President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk following weeks of government chaos, attacks on democratic rights and economic turmoil.
A huge crowd in Manhattan marched up 5th Avenue between Madison Square and Bryant Parks for the April 5 action, organized by groups including Rise and Resist and 50501. It was just one of more than a thousand protests across the country held Saturday to protest Trump’s actions over the first two months of his second term in office.
Protesters condemned Trump and Musk, who has worked closely with the president as the leader of the “Department of Governmental Efficiency,” for their actions to gut entire federal agencies, from the Federal Aviation Administration to the Social Security Administration and other bureaus.
Though Trump and Musk have said the cuts were needed to stop wasteful spending, opponents say they have sent thousands of workers to the unemployment line and threatened essential services and funding.
Marchers at the Manhattan “Hands Off” protest also protested Trump’s efforts to deport undocumented residents and limit voting rights; fracture America’s long-standing alliance with Canada; and launch a trade war punctuated this week with tariffs imposed on most nations around the world that sent stock markets into a tailspin – and put the country in danger of reignited inflation and a possible recession.
On Saturday, demonstrators from all walks of life chanted, “Stand up, fight back!” urging Americans and elected officials to do more to oppose the Trump agenda and protect the middle class.
“This is ripping apart everything we worked for,” said marcher Carroll Rodriguez. “We need to stand up now, or the fabric of this country will be ripped apart.”
Numerous marchers carried American flags as they walked up 5th Avenue. They also expressed the stress they’re feeling from the wave of Trump’s actions over the past 10 weeks.
“They want to take away our Medicaid and Social Security for the sake of winning,” marcher Robert Clarke said. “How is that a win for the American people at large?”
The NYPD did not have an exact number available of how many people participated in the Manhattan march, but things were peaceful; no arrests were reported.

The Knicks put the Hawks on an open fire on Saturday, jumping out to a 25-point halftime lead in a 121-105 victory for win No. 49 of the season. They will have an opportunity to secure win No. 50 for the second season in a row in the second leg of a back-to-back against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday — a game Jalen Brunson is expected to make his return after missing a month of action due to a sprained right ankle.
The Knicks scored 78 points in the first half: 38 in the opening period, followed by a monster 40-22 advantage in the second quarter. Their 78 points at the half marked the second-most New York has scored in any half this season, trailing only the 83-point second half against the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 27.
The Knicks also made 13 of their first 18 threes and finished the game 15-of-29 from downtown. It was their fourth-most efficient three-point shooting performance of the season.
Not bad for a team still missing its captain, its sixth man (Miles McBride – groin) and its defensive anchor (Mitchell Robinson – left ankle injury management), though the Hawks were without key pieces Jalen Johnson, Clint Cappella, Kobe Bufkin and Larry Nance Jr.
The Knicks didn’t need to take a trip to Magic City to find some wings. Instead they brought their own — and they were hot.
OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges combined for 32 first-half points and 44 on the night to help the Knicks build a 34-point lead out of halftime. Karl-Anthony Towns scored a game-high 30 points to go with 11 rebounds on 10-of-15 shooting from the field.
The Knicks strong defense continued on Saturday, holding all Hawks other than Trae Young (16 points, 5-of-15 shooting from the field) to 14 points or less. Caris LeVert, Georges Niang and Terence Mann combined for 41 points on 17-of-35 shooting from the field, but Atlanta’s starters mustered just 52 points compared to 100 for the Knicks’ starting five.
Josh Hart fell one rebound shy of his 10th triple double of the season with 16 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals, and Delon Wright finished with 10 points in 29 minutes starting for the injured Brunson. Cameron Payne returned to the lineup after missing six games with an anke sprain and finished with three points and five assists. Landry Shamet posted his fifth double-digit scoring performance in his last seven games with 12 points off the bench.
Despite the blowout, Anunoby, Hart, Bridges and Towns each logged 33 or more minutes, with head coach Tom Thibodeau subbing Anunoby in for Bridges with under five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The No. 3 Knicks improved to 3.5 games ahead of the fourth-seeded Indiana Pacers, who face MVP candidate Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.
