Police officers in Brooklyn shot and killed a driver on Tuesday night who allegedly tried to flee from an NYPD car stop and struck a lieutenant with his vehicle. 

According to sources familiar with the investigation, the NYPD Community Response Team spotted the driver operating his vehicle erratically along the Belt Parkway in East New York at about 8 p.m. on April 29.

Law enforcement sources said cops spotted mismatched license plates on the vehicle in question; it’s believed the plates belong to a stolen car.

Rather than engage the driver in a pursuit, the sources reported, cops moved to stop him by attempting a blockade on the westbound Belt Parkway at the Pennsylvania Avenue exit.

The driver, however, allegedly drove through the blockade, striking a lieutenant in the hip, law enforcement sources said. Despite being struck, authorities said, the lieutenant opened fire on the vehicle, sending a bullet penetrating through the car’s windshield and hitting him in the chest.

EMS pronounced the driver dead at the scene. A passenger in the car was taken into custody. The lieutenant, meanwhile, suffered minor injuries.

Police ask the public to steer clear of the area as the NYPD investigates. Significant traffic delays were reported on the Belt Parkway.
