King Charles III will not appear on Australia’s new $5 banknotes as the former British colony pivots away from the monarchy.

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II last year, currencies with her image will eventually be replaced. But in Australia, supporters of the republic movement have called for the royal family to be removed from its cash. The $5 bill is the only Australian banknote with an image of a British monarch, though coins feature the late queen.

British royals have been present on Australian currency since the Australian pound, which came out of circulation in the 1960s in favor of the Australian dollar.

But on Thursday, the Reserve Bank of Australia, which prints banknotes, said the new $5 bill will instead feature designs representing indigenous people, though the change will take several years to implement fully.

“This decision by the Reserve Bank Board follows consultation with the Australian government, which supports this change,” the bank said in a statement. “The Bank will consult with First Australians in designing the $5 banknote. The new banknote will take a number of years to be designed and printed. In the meantime, the current $5 banknote will continue to be issued. It will be able to be used even after the new banknote is issued.” 

Coins, however, will continue to carry images of British monarchs, as they are controlled by the Australian mint rather than the central bank. Australia said new coins will transition to using an image of King Charles III.

After Queen Elizabeth II died in September, Australia said King Charles III would not automatically replace her image on its $5 notes, with much of its other currencies already carrying indigenous Australian figures and artworks.

Nicknamed “Miracle Boy” by a media thirsty for inspiration porn, he doesn’t exactly feel lucky; his parents and beloved older brother are dead, he’s sent to live with a bitter aunt (Taylor Schilling), and his battle with post-traumatic stress is just beginning. “Sometimes,” says Edward, played by luminous newcomer Colin O’Brien, “I feel like the crash is still sitting on that field, and it’s never gonna stop burning.”

It’s an apt metaphor for the series’ central theme: grief. Unlike plane-crash thrillers from Lost to Yellowjackets, Dear Edward, premiering Feb. 3, is no puzzle box. Adapted by Friday Night Lights and Parenthood creator Jason Katims from the novel by Ann Napolitano, it’s a warmhearted but uneven ensemble drama grounded in a support group for the victims’ families.

Along with Schilling’s Lacey, who struggles to help Edward heal, we meet Dee Dee (Lights alum Connie Britton), a rich empty nester untangling her late husband’s web of secrets. Broke, pregnant, and estranged from her own family, Linda (Amy Forsyth) reaches out to the parents of her fiancé, who never so much as mentioned her to them before he perished. In a story line that often feels like an entirely different show, AOC-esque idealist Adriana (Anna Uzele) vies to replace her Harlem-congresswoman grandmother, a crash casualty, while falling for the Ghanaian brother (Idris Debrand) and daughter (Khloe Bruno) of another passenger. Tertiary characters unnecessarily expand the collage of love, lies, and impulsive behavior.

Katims, who was putting viewers in their feelings before This Is Us made tear-jerking a trend, was a natural choice to adapt Napolitano’s emotional book. But his weepy sensibility, distributed across half a dozen intersecting plots and hammered home by a plaintive indie-folk soundtrack, makes for a crushingly earnest melodrama. Despite many capable performances, few characters get enough screen time to evolve into more than stock types with generic problems. The sole exception, until its pat conclusion, is the story of the precocious, anxious, angry, erratic Edward. If only Katims hadn’t been so invested in depicting grief writ large, he might have created a genuinely moving portrait of one very specific experience with it.

Analyzing the concept of API management (APIM), its benefits, and what it will look like as the API landscape continues to evolve.

There are two fundamental truths in the API landscape.

• First: APIs have become a strategic tool for companies to expand their digital reach, accelerate their businesses, and do more for their customers.
• Second: because of the way they work and how they’ve been used so far, APIs are particularly vulnerable to attacks from bad actors. In fact, according to recent research, malicious API attack traffic surged 117% over the past year, indicating that the threat on APIs is far from abating.

So, where does this leave businesses that want to leverage the power of APIs? For starters, they need to invest in an API security strategy that covers all their bases. A robust strategy will be held up by a number of different tools and methodologies, including API management (APIM).

In this article, we’re taking a closer look at what APIM is, its benefits, and what it will look like as the API landscape continues to evolve.

What Is APIM?

APIM is the process of creating, distributing, monitoring, and analysing APIs that connect applications and data across the enterprise and clouds. Typically deployed as a scalable platform, APIM allows enterprises to share their API configurations while controlling access, monitoring and collecting usage data, and enforcing security policies related to APIs.

In other words, APIM gives businesses the power to better leverage the API economy without compromising on security. There are also internal benefits: managing all APIs on one unified platform lets enterprises share API documentation and coding constructs between teams, ultimately making things easier (and faster) for developers.

What Are the Components of APIM?

To facilitate flexibility, quality, speed, and security for enterprise APIs, APIM platforms are usually comprised of five key elements, outlined below.

API gateway: The API gateway acts as the portal through which all routing requests and protocol translations are handled. As APIs often have different structures and languages and are constantly changing, an API gateway facilitates communication, providing a single point of contact for internal and external parties to interact with APIs.

API developer portal: The developer portal provides a self-service hub for developers that want to access and share API documentation. This contributes significantly to speeding up how developers work with APIs, streamlining the building and testing processes, and providing consistency across the team.

API analytics: There’s a lot of value in understanding and evaluating a given API’s usage and operational metrics — and that’s where an API reporting and analytics function comes in. APIM platforms are often equipped with dashboards that provide this visibility and allow enterprise teams to make better decisions about how they use their APIs, such as whether it’s worth monetizing them. From an operational perspective, these dashboards help identify issues early so they can be addressed proactively.

API lifecycle management: With APIs, one of the biggest challenges is that there isn’t visibility into the whole lifecycle — from design to implementation and retirement. The reason is that APIs are often created for small internal uses and then launched into bigger use cases without the proper vetting. Lifecycle management mitigates this, providing a sustainable solution for building, testing, and managing APIs with version control support.

API policy manager: Each API should operate within a set of API policies that shape its evolution. API policy managers control the lifecycle of these policies and house broader policies that impact the entire API infrastructure.

In an APIM platform, each of these tools comes together to give companies a more complete and comprehensive view into their APIs and the control to enhance security across the API ecosystem.

What APIM is Not

From a security perspective, while APIM platforms are key for creating unified visibility and control over a company’s API infrastructure — and for facilitating the implementation of API security features — it’s important to note that it’s only one pillar in a robust API security strategy. API management platforms are not, fundamentally, security platforms. They lack key API security elements organizations should enforce, including continuous authentication and authorization, access control, data validation, runtime security tailored to the OWASP API Top 10 attacks, and a testing plan for APIs both in production and pre-prod.

It’s also important to note that APIM isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s essential to evaluate the company’s IT infrastructure and other resources to ensure that they are equipped to adopt and implement a new platform for its APIs. Do you have the right level of expertise on your team? Are you working with enough APIs to justify the adoption of an APIM platform? Do you have API security policies in place to enable your APIM tool to do its best work? These are all critical questions to ask as you evaluate this solution.

What Are the Benefits of APIM?

For many enterprises, APIs are the Wild West of their technical infrastructure. APIs often differ significantly from one another, making it challenging to create overarching measures to manage them. The landscape is constantly changing, so documentation quickly becomes outdated and irrelevant. This is part of what makes APIs such an appealing threat vector for cybercriminals. APIM remedies this while providing other benefits.

APIM supports businesses by:

• Centralising visibility to all API connections, lowering the risk of attacks, and giving teams the ability to identify gaps and duplicates
• Facilitating data-driven decisions for the business, such as monetizing the API
• Protecting the business from API-related threats
• Enabling the creation of detailed API documentation
• Creating better user experiences for API consumers
• Improving developer experiences
• Providing better insights into the current state of API security, allowing teams to create a better ecosystem

What Does the Future of APIM Look Like?

APIs aren’t going anywhere. Businesses are continuing to build applications that rely on hundreds, if not thousands, of APIs. With APIs exposed to multiple data centres, cloud providers, and customers, with different levels of access requirements and customization, the scale and complexity of the ecosystem are only going to get bigger. For enterprises that want to stay agile, organised, and secure, APIM will be crucial.

APIM will continue to be an important driver for functions such as versioning, deployment processes, usage metrics, and interoperability. And from a security perspective, they will develop as API gateways become more mature, doing more in the rate limiting, data masking, and authentication spaces.

Other changes will come within the interfaces themselves. There’s a growing shift in the developer tooling space with the emergence of tools that favour visual drag-and-drop functionalities instead of coding. This way, different teams can contribute to APIM within the bounds of their skill sets and still have a clear understanding of the workflows, API lifecycles, and API security policies.

As APIM platforms continue to mature, they will become an even more strategic asset for businesses that want to make the most of the API landscape without compromising their security.

The Nasdaq rose to a near five-month intraday high as Meta Platforms surged on rigorous cost controls, while a dovish message from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell boosted appetite for risky assets.

The Facebook parent (META.O) soared 26.9% to a near eight-month high after it announced a new $40 billion share buyback and said it would cut costs in 2023 by $5 billion to between $89 billion and $95 billion.

The S&P 500 Value index (.IVX) housing Meta jumped 2% to more than a year’s high.

“It certainly seems that markets are up because earnings for Meta were surprisingly positive,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research in New York.

Seven of the top 11 S&P 500 sectors advanced, with the communication services sector (.SPLRCL), which includes Meta, jumping 6.7% to its highest in five months.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) rose between 3.2% and 6.4% ahead of their quarterly results after markets close.

Wall Street’s main indexes got a boost as Powell acknowledged that inflation was starting to ease. The U.S. central bank raised rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday.

After a bruising 2022, U.S. stocks have made a strong comeback, with megacap companies gaining on hopes that the Fed will ease its hawkish monetary policy stance.

“Investors are finally looking beyond the specter of the Federal Reserve raising rates. They see there is an eventual end to the misery of rate hikes and are realizing so many stocks were oversold in the misery of last year,” said Peter Andersen, founder of Andersen Capital Management.

Meanwhile, data showed jobless claims unexpectedly fell last week to a nine-month low, highlighting the labor market’s resilience, ahead of nonfarm payroll numbers on Friday.

At 13:23 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) was down 93.07 points, or 0.27%, at 33,999.89, the S&P 500 (.SPX) was up 61.41 points, or 1.49%, at 4,180.62, and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) was up 383.38 points, or 3.24%, at 12,199.70.

The S&P 500’s chart formed a “golden cross” pattern, in which its 50-day moving average vaulted above the 200-day moving average, perceived by many as a bullish signal for near-term momentum.

The price-weighted Dow was the only major index in the red after disappointing earnings by some of its components. Honeywell International Inc (HON.O) shed 0.5% after posting a 28.6% fall in quarterly profit.

Drugmaker Merck & Co (MRK.N) slid 4.6% on a lower-than-expected annual forecast, while Eli Lilly & Co (LLY.N) dropped 5.5% on missing quarterly revenue estimates.

Align Technology Inc (ALGN.O) surged 29.3% to a nine-month high on its first quarterly results beat in a year.

Analysts now see earnings of S&P 500 firms declining 2.4% for the quarter, according to Refinitiv estimates.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.74-to-1 ratio on the NYSE, and by a 3.15-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&P index recorded 33 new 52-week highs and one new low, while the Nasdaq recorded 135 new highs and nine new lows.

U.S. House of Representatives Republicans on Thursday ousted Democrat Ilhan Omar from a high-profile committee over remarks widely condemned as antisemitic, two years after Democrats removed two Republicans from committee assignments.

The deeply divided House voted 218-211 along party lines to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee with Republicans citing the 2019 remarks for which she later apologized. One Republican voted “present.”

Omar, who arrived in the United States as a refugee from Somalia, is the only African-born member of Congress and one of the only Muslim women in the House. She was in line to be the top Democrat on the foreign affairs panel’s Africa subcommittee.

Republicans, who won a narrow House majority in November’s election after years in the minority, said they wanted Omar, a third-term House member, off Foreign Affairs for statements that included a 2019 tweet which read, “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” suggesting that Israel’s supporters in U.S. politics were motivated by money rather than principle.

Benjamin Franklin, whose signature on the 1776 Declaration of Independence and 1787 U.S. Constitution earned him the reputation as a founding father, is portrayed on the $100 bill.

During debate, Republican Mike Lawler said, “Words matter, rhetoric matters. It leads to harm. The congresswoman is being held accountable for her words and her actions.”

Omar and other Democrats said that any such remarks were made years ago and that Omar had deleted the posts and apologized at the time.

Moments before the House expelled her from the committee, a defiant Omar said, “My leadership and voice will not be diminished if I am not on this committee … my voice will get louder and stronger.”

Omar has said in the past that U.S. forces and that those of other nations should be held to the same standards of accountability when their actions hurt or kill civilians.

The ouster, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, was viewed by Democrats as revenge for their voting in 2021 to remove Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar from their committee assignments after incendiary remarks.

Gosar had posted a video on social media showing him appearing to kill another House member, Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

McCarthy has given committee assignments to both Greene and Gosar as well as George Santos, a newly elected representative who has admitted to fabricating much of his resume, although Santos has temporarily stepped away from those assignments while working to clear up questions about his ethics.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat, told reporters before the vote that Democrats had condemned Omar’s “Benjamins” remark.

“There has been accountability. Ilhan Omar has apologized. She has indicated she’ll learn from her mistakes” and was “building bridges” with the Jewish community. “This isn’t about accountability. It’s about political revenge.”

McCarthy previously rejected assignments of Democrats Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Both played major roles in the impeachments of Republican former President Donald Trump.

Omar was ejected along party lines in a 218-211 vote. No Republican joined Democrats in opposing her removal from the committee, though Rep. David Joyce (R., Ohio) voted present.

The anti-Israel Democrat has a history of using anti-Semitic rhetoric and tropes that has earned her censure from within her own party. In 2012, Omar said that “Israel has hypnotized the world.” Criticizing the pro-Israel lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee in 2019, she said, “It’s all about the Benjamins baby.” In 2021, she compared the United States and Israel to the terrorist organizations Hamas and the Taliban, saying they all have committed “crimes against humanity.”

Asked about her anti-Semitic rhetoric during a CNN interview on Sunday, Omar claimed she “wasn’t aware” there were “tropes about Jews and money.”

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.), a member along with Omar of the “Squad” of far-left House members, broke down in tears ahead of Thursday’s vote, telling Omar, “I am so sorry, sis, that our country is failing you today.”

The Republican Jewish Coalition celebrated the Democrat’s removal Thursday, saying “Omar will no longer be in a privileged position to influence legislation regarding US policy toward Israel and the Middle East.”

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), who has led the charge to remove Omar and other controversial Democrats from committees, withstood an early test to his leadership from Republicans who opposed demoting Omar. It looked like McCarthy’s bid to remove the Democrat from the Foreign Affairs Committee might be in peril this week after several Republicans said they might vote to protect Omar’s place on the committee.

Reps. Victoria Spartz (R., Ind.), Nancy Mace (R., S.C.), and Ken Buck (R., Colo.) criticized Omar’s removal on procedural grounds, with Spartz saying McCarthy’s effort to strip her committee assignments denied Omar “proper due process.” Spartz on Tuesday reversed course, saying she would vote with McCarthy after receiving a commitment from the speaker to address procedural concerns regarding the removal of members from committees.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.) on Tuesday said he was “undecided” on removing Omar and praised Omar’s opposition to “neoconservative” foreign policy.

Spartz, Mace, Buck, and Gaetz all changed their minds by Thursday, voting to eject Omar.

McCarthy rebuffed accusations from Democrats that the vote represented retaliation against his political enemies. Democratic House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) had pointed to controversial comments from House Republicans such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) as evidence that McCarthy’s expulsion of Omar was hypocritical.

“Is [Greene] on Foreign Affairs? Is she on Intel?” McCarthy said Thursday. “OK, I make my case.”

Omar during the Sunday CNN interview attributed the Republican bid to eject her to “Islamophobia.”

“These people are OK with Islamophobia,” Omar said. “They’re OK with trafficking in their own ways in anti-Semitism. They are not OK with having a Muslim have a voice on that committee.”

As the United States’ economy continues to suffer from slow growth and inflation, President Joe Biden announced Thursday that his National Economic Council director Brian Deese is stepping down.

Biden praised Deese for helping him “steer my economic vision into reality,” even as the country has come to the brink of recession. Biden touted Deese’s “critical” role in key legislation, including the American Rescue Plan, the CHIPS Act—a $280 billion technology investment that House Republicans say benefits China—and the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, which even Biden’s allies knew would not reduce inflation.

Deese, in a tweet Thursday, thanked the president “for putting your trust in me; for leading us with resolve and integrity; and for your unwavering vision that we can and will build an economy that works for all Americans.”

The president gave no details on when Deese will depart or who will replace him.
