Explosions recorded at plant in Russian-occupied Melitopol

Explosions rang out previous evening at the Hydromash plant in Melitopol, captured by Russian troops.

In accordance to Ukrinform, Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fedorov claimed this in a write-up on the Telegram messaging application.

“It was far too loud at the Hydromash plant, which was captured by the Rashists, exactly where they placed one more navy foundation,” he wrote.

“The occupiers smoked so powerfully that the roar lasted for a number of hrs, the blast wave broke the home windows of neighboring homes, and plumes of smoke billowed over the factory even in the early morning. We are ready for details on how many ‘orcs’ and enemy machines were destroyed by using tobacco,” Fedorov said.

Protesters clash with police at COVID antigen kit maker factory in China, videos show

2023-01-08T08:59:47Z

Police intervene at a protest at a factory, amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Chongqing, China in this screen grab from a video released on January 7, 2023 obtained by Reuters/via REUTERS. THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY A THIRD PARTY. NO RESALES. NO ARCHIVES.

Protesters clashed with police in central China during a demonstration on Saturday by hundreds of people at a factory producing COVID-19 antigen kits, several videos posted to social media showed.

Online users said the protest was over wages and the layoff of several workers by the manufacturer, Zybio, in the central municipality of Chongqing.

Reuters was unable to obtain any immediate comment from Zybio, but verified, via geolocation, that some of videos were filmed at the company’s factory in Chongqing.

One video showed people throwing traffic cones, boxes and stools at police carrying riot shields. Another video, posted on social media platforms such as Twitter and Douyin, showed dozens of protesters chanting “return our money”.

A person who answered a phone call at Zybio’s headquarters declined to comment on Sunday. Emails to the company were not immediately answered.

Protests are not rare in China, which has over the years seen people demonstrate over issues such as financial scams or labour disputes.

But authorities have been on higher alert after a series of protests late last year, including worker unrest at Apple (AAPL.O) supplier Foxconn’s (2317.TW) massive iPhone factory in central China, as well as widespread protests in Chinese cities and top universities against COVID restrictions.

Torrential downpours and damaging winds left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power in California late on Sunday as the area braced for the next onslaught of severe weather.

More than 330,000 homes and businesses were reported to be still without power in California as of 3:08 ET (8:08 GMT) on Sunday night, according to data from PowerOutage.us.

At least six people have died in the severe weather since New Year’s weekend, including a toddler killed by a fallen redwood tree crushing a mobile home in northern California.

Forecasters have meanwhile warned yet another “atmospheric river” of dense, moist tropical air will clobber California on Monday with rain and mountain snow.

An NWS weather alert on Saturday warned that the cumulative effect of successive heavy rain storms since late December could bring rivers to record high levels and cause flooding across much of Central California.
