This week marks 24 years since the Sept. 11 attacks at the World Trade Center. As the anniversary approaches, communities across Brooklyn will gather to honor the lives and reflect on the tragedy that forever changed the city.
Memorials and vigils will be held throughout the borough, providing residents with an opportunity to pay tribute and stand together in remembrance.
Sept. 10
Candlelight ceremony at the Brooklyn 9/11 Wall of Remembrance
The Brooklyn 9/11 Wall of Remembrance will host “A Light and a Prayer” candlelight ceremony on Sept. 10 at the “western wall of Maimonides Park” in Coney Island. They plan to honor “those on the Wall and those responders who have passed away from 9/11 related illnesses since then.”
At 5:30 p.m., they’ll play special music to “celebrate the lives” of those on the Wall, with the ceremony to start at 7:00 p.m. Candles will be provided.
Sept. 11
Memorial service at Seth Low Park
Council member Susan Zhuang and Assembly member William Colton will host a community memorial service on Sept. 11 at Bensonhurst’s Seth Low Park. The 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. event will “honor the lives lost during the Sept. 11 attacks and pay tribute to the first responders and community members who helped New York rebuild in the aftermath.”
According to the members, the event will feature keynote speakers, color guards, students from I.S. 96 Seth Low and recognition of “local leaders and community partners.”
Memorial candle vigil at Bill Brown Park
The Brooklyn/Bedford Park 9/11 Memorial Committee will hold its annual candle vigil at the handball court at Bill Brown Park on Avenue X between East 25th Street and Bedford Avenue. The ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Sunset Park 9/11 Vigil
Council Member Alexa Avilés, Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes and Community Board 7 will sponsor a memorial vigil at Sunset Park’s 9/11 Living Memorial Grove on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. They will “gather alongside community members” to honor the lives lost and their loved ones.
Vigil at American Veterans Memorial Pier
NIA Community Services Network will host its annual vigil on Sept. 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Bay Rudge’s American Veterans Memorial Pier. Co-sponsored by Council member Justin Brannan and State Senator Andrew Goundardes, the vigil will feature remarks from community members, first responders, performances and interfaith prayers.
Memorial Lights viewing at the Green-Wood Cemetery
The Green-Wood Cemetery “serves as the final resting place for over 100 people who lost their lives” on Sept. 11. From 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., watch the memorial lights over Manhattan on one of the cemetery’s hills and stay for speakers and a name-reading of those memorialized at the cemetery. The cemetery encourages registering before the free event.
Asser Levy Park Memorial Ceremony
The September 11 Family Group will host a memorial ceremony at Asser Levy Park at 4:00 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the park’s 9/11 memorial on Surf Avenue and West 5th Street and remember those memorialized there.

The Brooklyn 9/11 Wall of Remembrance will host its “A Light and a Prayer” candlelight ceremony on Sept. 10 at the western wall of Maimonides Park in Coney Island. The event will honor those listed on the Wall, as well as responders who have died from 9/11-related illnesses.

A Brooklyn man is being held without bail after he was charged with attempted murder for the vicious beatdown of a motorist in Astoria, who remains in a coma.
Norberto Ordonez-Delvalle, 25, of Bay Ridge Avenue in Bensonhurst, surrendered to the NYPD’s Queens Warrants Squad in Queens Village and was later booked at the 114th Precinct in Astoria on Thursday, Sept. 6. He was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court the following day on a complaint charging him with attempted murder in the second degree, multiple counts of assault in the first degree and vehicular assault in the second degree, a felony under VaSean’s Law, named for a Kew Gardens Hills elementary school student, which toughens provisions of the Penal Law pertaining to the death or injury caused by a driver who is drunk or impaired by the use of drugs.
According to the criminal complaint, on the morning of Friday, Aug. 1, Ordonez-Delvalle was involved in a verbal dispute with a 30-year-old man who drove a white 2005 Cadillac in front of 45-03 Broadway in Astoria, just between 6:35 a.m. and 6:55 a.m. As the dispute intensified, Ordonez-Delvalle got into a black 2012 Nissan Altima and drove it straight at the victim, striking him, causing him to fall to the street. Video surveillance shows the victim getting up from the ground while Ordonez-Delvalle put the vehicle in reverse and attempted to hit the man again before driving away. The video showed the Altima return to the scene moments later, and Ordonez-Delvalle got out and punched the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground, and then repeatedly punching him in the face. Ordonez-Delvalle got back into the car and sped away from the scene northbound on 45th Street. The victim sustained severe trauma to his head and was rushed by EMS to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
A doctor from the surgical intensive care unit at Elmhurst Hospital informed a detective from the 114th Precinct that the victim suffered a subdural hematoma brain bleed. He needed a craniotomy, a surgical procedure to remove part of his skull to give neurosurgeons access to his brain, and he has been in a medically induced coma since he was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital on Aug. 1, according to the criminal complaint.
Queens Criminal Court Judge Lana Schlesinger remanded Ordonez-Delvalle into custody without bail. Former Governor George Pataki held a signing ceremony for VaSean’s Law at P.S. 165 in Kew Gardens Hills in 2005, where 11-year-old VaSean Alleyne went to school before he was struck and killed by a drunk driver from Fresh Meadows in October 2004.
