‘Brooklyn’s Bravest’: Rescue Company 2 marks 100 years of service

The FDNY’s elite Rescue Company 2 celebrated its 100th anniversary on Saturday. Established in 1925, the unit — nicknamed “The Rescue” — has built a reputation as one of the toughest firefighting teams in the department, specializing in rescuing civilians and recovering downed firefighters from hazardous conditions.

Over the past century, only 400 firefighters and fire officers have served in the highly decorated unit, which has suffered 12 line-of-duty deaths. Originally stationed on Carlton Avenue in Fort Greene, where it shared a firehouse with Engine Company 210, the company later moved to Jay Street before relocating to 1472 Bergen St. in Weeksville.

Today, it operates from 1815 Sterling Place in Ocean Hill.

For 100 years, the firefighters of Rescue Company 2 have put their lives on the line, responding to the most high-risk emergencies in New York City.Photo by Lloyd Mitchell
A solemn moment during the anniversary ceremony as firefighters reflect on the 12 Rescue 2 members lost in the line of duty. Their sacrifices are forever etched into the company’s history.Photo by Lloyd Mitchell

Chief Freddie Gallagher founded rescue Company 2 with a singular mission: to get civilians and firefighters out of dangerous situations. The company responds to all confirmed fires in Brooklyn and provides specialized assistance across Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx when needed. Operating with six members per shift, the unit is called upon for some of the city’s most challenging emergencies.

Reflecting on the legacy of Rescue Company 2, Captain Liam Flaherty paid tribute to past members, recalling his early days in the FDNY.

“When I was a young firefighter at Engine Company 238 in Williamsburg, we were assigned as the extra engine,” he said. “I saw Rescue 2 roll up. I saw Jack Kleehaas walk out of the bread box, Ray Downey get out of the officer’s seat with this look of ‘been there, done that before.’”

Throughout the day, stories of heroism were shared, with one in particular standing out.

“It is mind-boggling how many legends walked through these doors,” Flaherty said. “This may go down as one of the most epic transmissions on the fireground ever. There was a major collapse at an auto parts store on Fourth Avenue. The chief is running around screaming to his aide, ‘Give a second alarm.’ Larry Grey, from under the collapsed debris with his arm sticking out, says, ‘Make that a third alarm.’”

For Senior Firefighter Jimmy Lopez, Rescue Company 2 has always been more than a firehouse — it’s a legacy. His father worked at the company from 1972 through 1985.

“The place always smelled like fire,” he recalled. “As a child, I could feel the intensity of the unit. Through the eyes of a young firefighter, I wanted to emulate them. They were leaders and elevated everyone around them.”

Lopez said the high standards of Rescue Company 2 pushed every firefighter to be their best, leaving no room for complacency.

“You can elevate yourself at other companies by cooking or being funny — the only thing that matters here is your ability to do your job,” he said. “Rescue 2’s reputation has been earned through blood, sweat, and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice.”

The March 1 celebration brought together both old and new members to recognize “The Rescue’s” century of service.

“The members who work at Rescue 2 are role models,” said FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker. “They are humble. They are mentors, and they’re experts at their craft. I wish them hundreds more years of the kind of service that they’ve given to our great city.”

Michael Blake, son of Jamaican immigrants, runs for NYC Mayor

At a time when New York City is seemingly facing a leadership crisis, Michael Blake, the son of Jamaican immigrants, says his decision to run for mayor is driven by his belief that “New York City deserves better and is due the best in leadership.”

Blake grew up in a working-class family in the Bronx—his mother was a 40-year manufacturer who raised four boys, and his late father, a member of the labor union 1199SEIU, worked as a maintenance supervisor at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx — told Caribbean Life that he is “committed to tackling the issues that affect the everyday lives of New Yorkers, especially those who have been marginalized.”

He said his platform centers on several key areas: addressing the True Cost of Living, Affordable Housing and Homelessness, Managing Efficient and Effective Government, and Education and Youth Empowerment.

Blake said he intends to address the actual cost of living in New York City with strategies like guaranteed income and incentives to increase wages, especially for childcare and homecare providers.

He also seeks to create job opportunities by investing in small businesses and creating a fairer economic landscape.

With rising and unaffordable rents and housing costs, Blake said he plans to establish a Mitchell Lama 2.0 strategy to address the housing crisis.

He also said he would increase affordable housing construction, invest in support services for unhoused New Yorkers and people in mental health crises, and remove credit scores from rent and mortgage applications.

An ordained minister, Blake said he wants to “bring trust and integrity back to City Hall by restoring accountability and innovating on how public services are delivered.”

He said his priorities will focus on improved public safety and public transportation and strengthening access to the arts, culture, sports, and entertainment.

Blake believes that education is “the key to unlocking opportunity. ” He aims to invest more in public schools, particularly those in underserved communities, expand access to higher education and skilled trades for students of color, and fully fund universal childcare for all families.

Blake said he embodies “the spirit of resilience and community” – values instilled in him by his parents, who, he said, “worked tirelessly to build a better life for their family.”

In his run for mayor of New York City, Blaske said he draws on his faith and service, along with his rich background in public service, business, and social justice, “to offer a clear vision for the city’s future.”

He said his upbringing in an immigrant family taught him the importance of hard work, community support, and the pursuit of opportunities.

Blake said his experience growing up in the Bronx has shaped his understanding of the challenges faced by working-class New Yorkers and has fueled his commitment to creating opportunities for all, particularly communities of color.

He often jokes about being able to manage three jobs because of his roots.

A deep sense of responsibility defined Blake’s early life. In 2014, he was elected to the New York State Assembly, representing the 79th District in the Bronx.

During his three terms, Blake became known for his advocacy for small businesses, education, and social justice.

His key achievements included Supporting Small, Minority, and Women-Owned Businesses, criminal justice reform, and My Brother’s Keeper Program.

He said his advocacy led to legislation that reduced the payment period for small businesses contracting with New York State from 30 days to 15 days.

He was also instrumental in extending the Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) program, which has provided millions of dollars in contracts for minority-owned businesses.

Blake said he led efforts to pass the “Raise The Age” legislation, which ensures that 16 and 17-year-olds are no longer tried as adults in criminal court.

He said his commitment to reforming the criminal justice system also included securing funding for lead remediation in public housing and pushing for more diversity in the medical field through scholarships for students of color.

Blake said he successfully created the first statewide My Brother’s Keeper program in New York, which has raised more than $74 million over four years to support young people of color and improve educational outcomes.

He said these legislative accomplishments reflect his “deep commitment to equity and fairness,” which is central to his vision for the future of New York City.

Blake’s leadership extends beyond New York. From 2017 to 2021, he served as vice chair-at-large of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), becoming the first Black man elected to a DNC leadership role since Ron Brown in 1989.

Blake said he worked to mobilize young voters, communities of color, and local candidates nationwide.

He said he traveled to 31 states and Japan, where he organized campaign training and voter mobilization strategies.

Additionally, Rev. Blake worked in the Obama-Biden administration as associate director of Public Engagement, where he focused on outreach to African American, minority, and women business owners.

He also played a key role in launching the White House Urban Entrepreneurship Summit and worked to increase federal procurement for minority and women-owned businesses, resulting in record-high spending on these enterprises.

“I’m here for the people,” he said. “For Blake, running for Mayor is not just about seeking office — it’s about ensuring that every New Yorker, regardless of background, has an opportunity to thrive.”

Rev. Blake said he is poised to do well as the only candidate representing his native borough of the Bronx and Harlem.

Likewise, as a member of the Jamaican community, he said he would leverage his relationships in Central Brooklyn and Southeast Queens.

He exuded strong confidence in winning the mayoral race, bolstered by his deep connections to New York City, where he said he has built a reputation for being “a tireless advocate for underserved communities.”

Blake said his clear vision for a more equitable and inclusive city resonates with a broad base of voters who are looking for change, making him a strong candidate to be ranked second or third on ballots when voters already have a favorite in mind.

With his wealth of experience in public service and community organizing, Blake said he is “well-equipped to address the city’s most pressing issues.”

He said his leadership, rooted in a genuine commitment to social justice, makes him a strong contender in the race.

As the city grapples with economic disparity, housing shortages, and calls for reform, Blake said his message of hope, progress, and integrity presents “a compelling case” for his leadership.

But he said he is “not just running for mayor;” he’s “running to build a better, fairer New York for everyone.”

Blake said his campaign is about creating a city where every New Yorker has the chance to succeed, regardless of their background.

With his proven track record, unwavering commitment, and vision for the future, Blake said he is ready to lead New York City into a new era of opportunity and justice.

“Tomorrow begins today! he stressed.

Drunk driver jailed for killing 31-year-old woman crossing Atlantic Avenue

A Borough Park man was sentenced last week to three to nine years in prison for killing 31-year-old Katherine “Katie” Harris while driving drunk and speeding through a red light in Cobble Hill in 2023.

Erick Taxilaga Trujillo, 29, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on Jan. 27 in connection with the April 16, 2023, crash that killed the makeup artist and aesthetician, originally from Hyde Park, as she crossed Atlantic Avenue. Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Christopher Robles handed down the sentence on Feb. 27.

“This defendant made a disastrous decision when he got behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement. “In doing so, he caused an innocent woman to be killed and endangered many others in Brooklyn that night. He has now been held accountable for his criminal conduct. I remain committed to keeping our borough’s streets safe for all people.”

Taxilaga Trujillo was driving a 2012 Volvo S60 westbound on Atlantic Avenue at around 9:56 p.m. when he ran a red light at Clinton Street and struck Harris, who was in the crosswalk with the right of way. Taxilaga Trujillo then rear-ended another vehicle, causing both cars to crash into an outdoor dining shed.

Paramedics arrived shortly after the incident and found Harris several yards from the intersection where the crash occurred, pronouncing her dead on the scene.

When police officers arrived, they observed Taxilaga Trujillo with red eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol on his breath. He refused to take a breathalyzer test but later underwent a blood test at Methodist Hospital, which showed a blood alcohol concentration of .17 — more than twice the legal limit of .08.

Data from the vehicle’s black box showed Taxilaga Trujillo was driving 72 mph in a 25 mph zone, authorities said.

In a tribute to Harris, her family said she had always dreamed of moving to New York City from upstate and “after years of hard work and determination, she “made that dream a reality,” making Brooklyn her home.

“Katie was a bold and fearless woman who spoke her mind and never hesitated to share her thoughts and opinions. Her ambition, determination, and focus were unmatched,” the family wrote in her obituary.

Following Harris’ death, local leaders called on the city to take immediate action to protect Brooklynites on the crash-prone thoroughfare. The Department of Transportation later implemented new safety projects along Atlantic Avenue, including mid-block crossings and new traffic signal changes.
