With apocalyptic scenes unfolding across Los Angeles County due to devastating wildfires, Brooklyn-based businesses are stepping up to help.

Through Sunday, Jan. 19, Time Out Market New York is partnering with the Red Cross Wildfire Relief to host a promotion on select beverages. The Dumbo-based market will donate 100% of proceeds from two drinks — the Blueberry Margarita and the Cucumber & Jalapeño Spritz mocktail — to aid those affected by the disaster, one of the most destructive in the country’s history.

Los Angeles County is grappling with catastrophic damage as wildfires, including the Eaton Fire and the historic Palisades Fire, have destroyed entire neighborhoods. An estimated 10,000 structures have been lost, and tens of thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate, leaving communities in desperate need of support.

More than 200 American Red Cross workers are on the ground assisting residents in southern California, while the organization itself partners with other groups and businesses like Time Out to raise funds for relief efforts.

“This initiative is an opportunity to bring the DUMBO community together for a cause that reaches far beyond Brooklyn,” said a representative from Time Out Market New York. “We’re proud to partner with the Red Cross Wildfire Relief and these brands to make a tangible impact.”

In addition to the market’s donation, beverage sponsors Tromba Tequila, Italicus, and Hagave have pledged to contribute $1 for each drink sold.

A handful of other North Brooklyn businesses are gearing up to give back, Greenpointers first reported.

Coz Salon is hosting a supply drive for essentials like toiletries and blankets, while Behrhaus is organizing baby product donations for families in need. Speakeasy Rentals is offering free rooms in Williamsburg this month to displaced individuals, and Pilates BKLYN will donate all proceeds from Saturday’s 2 p.m. class to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Archestratus is planning a bake sale fundraiser on Jan. 25, inviting locals to bake or buy for the cause, and Big Night is donating 10% of sales this weekend to support firefighters.

The Sky Wise Lounge in Sheepshead Bay was the site of a jubilant celebration late last month as Assembly Member Michael Novakhov marked his re-election for District 45. The standing-room-only event brought together community leaders, elected officials, activists, performers, and South Brooklyn residents.

Novakhov’s second term comes on the heels of a tight election, which he narrowly won over Democratic challenger Joey Cohen-Saban. On election night, just 270 votes separated the two candidates, but the incumbent ultimately pulled ahead to secure his seat.

Brooklyn Republican Party Chairman Richard Barsamian opened Dec. 23 celebration with a powerful speech.

“Tonight, we celebrate not just a well-deserved second term for Assemblyman Novakhov, but the triumph of democracy,” he said. “Michael has always opened his heart and office to his constituents, exemplifying the best in public service.”

Novakhov took the stage to thank the crowd and share his vision for the next two years.

“This victory would not have been possible without the support of every person in this room,” he began. “Together, we’ve worked to make South Brooklyn safer, remove drugs from our streets, and demand transparency in government. But our work is far from over. We will continue to fight for fairness, opportunity, and a better future for all our families.”

Novakhov, a former USSR immigrant and co-founder of Freedom FM, expressed gratitude to his community.

“Every conversation I’ve had on the streets, in your homes, and at community events reminds me why I do this work,” he said. “You want safer streets, fairness in government, and better opportunities for your children. I promise to keep fighting for you, for our shared values, and for the community we all love.”

Assembly Member Jaime Williams, a Democrat whose district includes the neighborhoods of Canarsie, Flatlands, Mill Basin and Gerritsen Beach, praised Novakhov’s leadership.

“Michael is a great friend and colleague,” she said. “He is a fighter who stands up for his community, even in the face of significant challenges. Together, we’re sending a clear message that South Brooklyn remains strong, resilient, and focused on building a brighter future.”

The evening’s highlight was the swearing-in ceremony, led by Barsamian. Novakhov, holding a Torah, reflected on the moment’s significance. “The second swearing-in is more meaningful than the first,” he said. “It’s a testament to hard work and the trust of the people.”

The November general election marked a resurgence for the Republican Party in Brooklyn, as former President Donald Trump made significant inroads in traditionally blue areas. While Brooklyn remained largely Democratic, Trump’s influence was evident in southern Brooklyn, where neighborhoods like Sheepshead Bay, Coney Island, and Bensonhurst swung red.

In these areas, Republicans re-elected Assembly Members Alec Brook-Krasny and Lester Chang, and despite a tight race, Novakhov. In Senate District 17, Republican Steve Chan unseated Democratic incumbent Iwen Chu.

Brook-Krasny and Chan were in attendance for Novakhov’s swearing-in, as was former New York City Council Member Ari Kagan. Performers and singers added to the festive atmosphere, energizing the crowd with vibrant music and dance.

Novakhov concluded the evening with a heartfelt acknowledgment.

“To everyone who came, supported, gave gifts, said kind words, shook hands, smiled, and genuinely enjoyed our victory — thank you! This was an incredible night, and I look forward to continuing our journey together. And remember,” he added with a grin, “the next party is in two years!”

Novakhov’s 45th Assembly District includes portions of Sheepshead Bay, Midwood, Manhattan Beach, Gravesend and Brighton Beach.
