@GovKathyHochul: Like all New Yorkers, I’m praying for the @nyspolice Trooper who was shot in Hempstead last night. Today I’ve spoken to law enforcement leaders to express our support and solidarity. We stand with them during this difficult time.

FDNY pickup truck driver kills cyclist in Park Slope

An FDNY pickup truck driver hit and killed a 24-year-old cyclist in Park Slope on Wednesday night.

The cyclist, Bronx resident Victor Hidalgo, was riding east on Sackett Street when the driver struck him at the intersection of 4th Avenue.

Per the FDNY, the driver was responding to a 911 call for a baby choking at the time of the crash, and had his emergency lights on as he crossed through the intersection. It was not immediately clear if the siren was also activated, or if the truck driver — who was headed northbound on 4th Avenue — had a green light.

The driver stopped and stayed at the scene, according to the NYPD. Paramedics brought Hidalgo to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Hidalgo was a delivery worker, and is survived by his wife and 1-year-old son, who live in his native Mexico, according to Streetsblog

Hidalgo was at least the 22nd cyclist killed in New York City this year, according to Department of Transportation data, and the seventh to be killed in Brooklyn. At least ten of the citywide cyclist fatalities involved pickup trucks, box trucks, or tractor-trailers, the data shows.

Sackett Street, where Hidalgo was riding, has a painted bike lane that overlaps with the vehicle traffic lane, with no physical separation. Fourth Avenue is notoriously dangerous for bike riders — a 49-year-old cyclist was killed by a pickup truck driver at the intersection of 4th Avenue and 53rd Street in May, and dozens more cyclists have been injured on the avenue this year, per DOT data.

Daytime Halloween shooting in Brooklyn leaves two men wounded: cops

Halloween got off to a grim start in Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon when two men were injured in a brazen daylight shooting, authorities confirmed.

According to police sources, officers from the 75th Precinct and Police Service Area 2 rushed to 335 Fountain Ave., just outside of the Cypress Hills NYCHA complex, at around 1:27 p.m. on Oct. 31 after 911 reports of gunfire in the street.

Responding officers say they discovered a 19-year-old boy suffering a graze wound to his back while a 24-year-old man sustained a bullet wound to his shoulder.

EMS rushed both victims to Brookdale University Hospital where they are expected to survive.

Cops say they are looking for two suspects who fled the area but did not immediately have a description of the pair.

“Thank goodness this happened now and not while the young kids were trick-or-treating,” one local resident commented.

New York has seen a spate of shootings involving teenagers with five teens being shot to death since last week. There have been 45 shooting incidents in the confines of the 75th Precinct so far this year, compared to 44 in 2023, according to the NYPD database.

Anyone with information regarding this incident can call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (for Spanish, dial 888-57-PISTA). You can also submit tips online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, or on X (formerly Twitter) @NYPDTips. All calls and messages are kept confidential.
