Earlier this month, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy hosted its 11th annual Brooklyn Black Tie Ball, drawing a crowd of notable figures to Pier 2 for an evening of celebration and fundraising. The event, co-hosted by television personality Seth Meyers, took place against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline and New York Harbor.

The Conservancy honored four individuals who played critical roles in transforming a neglected waterfront into the thriving public space it is today: Daniel Doctoroff, founder and chairman of Target ALS; Regina Myer, president of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership; Nanette Smith of Bloomberg LP; and landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh. The honorees were lauded for their dedication to turning the once dilapidated waterfront into a verdant park that now attracts over 5 million visitors each year.

Brooklyn Bridge Park, which opened in 2010, has become a model for innovative park development and the reclamation of urban waterfronts.

The Oct. 9 ball raised a record $1.7 million to support the Conservancy’s ongoing efforts to produce more than 400 free and low-cost arts, cultural, educational, and recreational events each season. The event featured cocktails on the pier, followed by a seated dinner and a night of dancing under the stars.

In a post on social media, the Conservancy lauded the event as a smashing success.

“The night was filled with inspiration, heartfelt gratitude, and a deep sense of unity around our shared commitment to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s mission,” the group said.

Among the attendees were Emmy award-winning actor Matthew Rhys, NBA veteran and podcast host JJ Redick, journalist Savannah Guthrie, actress Keri Russell, and restaurateur Peter Aschkenasy.

The evening’s dress code, dubbed “Brooklyn Black Tie,” put a playful (and local) spin on the classic attire.

All you need is a dollar and a dream. Mayor Eric Adams and local elected officials toured the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in East Flatbush, a $141 million project that is halfway complete.

New York City Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Tom Foley and Mayor Adams reviewed the site on Oct. 21, a little over a year after breaking ground on the facility.

The Foster Avenue rec center will feature numerous amenities including an indoor pool, a public plaza, a teaching kitchen, a media lab, green roof and more — and was made possible through collaboration between elected officials and community leaders, who lobbied to build the expansive new center as part of a holistic approach to serve young people and reduce violence within the neighborhood.

“A lot of kids will have their dreams realized here,” Adams said. “Kids in this neighborhood won’t have to leave the area to study or participate in sports like basketball, track and field, and swimming.”

The center is named after Shirley Chisholm, the trailblazing Brooklyn-born politician who became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress and the first to seek the Democratic presidential nomination, in recognition of her lifelong commitment to public service and advocating for underserved communities.

Her legacy has lived on in the work of those bringing the rec center to life. Foley on Monday praised the “Fab Four” team leading the development.

“We’re incredibly proud of the work the superstar women are doing here,” he said.

The project is expected to be completed in July 2025.

An alleged hit-and-run driver was arrested Friday after fatally striking a pedestrian in Bushwick.

Police said the victim, 59-year-old Bushwick resident Marco Tirado Gallardo, was crossing DeKalb Avenue at Wyckoff Street in the crosswalk just after 9:30 a.m. when Lennis Escalona Luna, driving an 18-foot-long delivery truck, ran over him in the sidewalk as he attempted to turn right onto DeKalb Avenue. 

Luna reportedly fled the scene, leaving Gallardo in the street. Paramedics rushed the victim to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center with “severe trauma,” where he was later pronounced dead. 

According to the New York Daily News, police identified the company that owned the truck and had the company’s owner summon Luna back to headquarters hours after the crash, where he was taken into custody. He was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care. Under New York State law, both charges carry hefty fines or possible short jail sentences.

Since 2019, the intersection of Wyckoff and DeKalb avenues has seen three crashes resulting in four injuries, according to NYC CrashMapper. Dozens more have been reported at surrounding intersections along the busy DeKalb Avenue. In 2020, a 77-year-old woman was fatally struck by a driver on DeKalb Avenue just a block from the scene of Friday’s crash. 

Large vehicles — including trucks of all kinds — pose a particular threat to pedestrians on city streets. Earlier this year, an 83-year-old woman was killed by a dump truck driver in Boerum Hill — less than a year after an 86-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a dump truck in Williamsburg. Dozens of Brooklynites have been injured in recent years by delivery trucks, dump trucks, and standard pickup trucks. 

“My deepest condolences to the loved ones of the victim,” said Bushwick Council Member Sandy Nurse on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Our city must take stronger action to prevent pedestrian fatalities and ensure safer streets for all.”
