(JTA) — Pinchas Goldschmidt, the former chief rabbi of Moscow who fled the country earlier this year, said other Russian Jews should leave before it’s too late in an interview with the Guardian. 

“When we look back over Russian history, whenever the political system was in danger you saw the government trying to redirect the anger and discontent of the masses towards the Jewish community,” Goldschmidt told the Guardian. “We saw this in tsarist times and at the end of the Stalinist regime.”

He argued that Russia’s floundering invasion of Ukraine is starting to foster a similar environment.

“We’re seeing rising antisemitism while Russia is going back to a new kind of Soviet Union, and step by step the Iron Curtain is coming down again. This is why I believe the best option for Russian Jews is to leave,” Goldschmidt said. 

Goldschmidt, who was born in Switzerland but has been serving Russian Jewry since 1989, left the country in June, nearly four months after Russia began its invasion. He said that he was being pressured to support the invasion and feared the impact his refusal might have on Moscow’s Jewish community. 

“Pressure was put on community leaders to support the war and I refused to do so. I resigned because to continue as chief rabbi of Moscow would be a problem for the community because of the repressive measures taken against dissidents,” he said.

However, others in Russia have denied that claim, including the director of Moscow’s Choral Synagogue which reelected him chief rabbi almost immediately after he left.

Other Jewish leaders in Russia have remained in the country, such as Berel Lazar, a rabbi affiliated with the Hasidic Chabad-Lubavitch movement who despite long being seen as close to Putin has spoken out against the war.

But Jews, like Russians of all ethnicities, have been fleeing Russia en masse since the war began in late February. In August, it was estimated that more than 20,000 of Russia’s 165,000 Jews had fled the country. 

“There’s a section of Russian society called the creacle, the creative class of business and cultural leaders, intellectuals and artists,” Goldschmidt said, “and I think it’s safe to say a great percentage of those people have left Russia, which is and will be very detrimental to Russian society.”

During the interview with the Guardian, Goldschmidt, who is also the president of the Conference of European rabbis, additionally discussed other issues facing European Jewry, such as rising antisemitism around the world, and how the state of European Jewry compares to the situation for Jews in the United States.

“For many years, Jews in the U.S. believed that it was an exception, that whatever happened in Europe and other countries could never happen there,” Goldschmidt said. “But over the past three years there have been more attacks on Jews there than in Europe. 

“What is changing is the political system is much more polarized but also the discourse has been upended by social media. The polarization we’re seeing has made antisemitism much more acceptable.”

During the interview, Goldschmit also praised Ukraine’s Jewish community, denying Putin’s line that it is Nazi state. 

“Show me another country that is in the grip of Nazis where the Jewish community is thriving,” Goldschmidt said.

(JTA) — Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Commonwealth — commonly referred to as the United Kingdom’s chief rabbi — can now add a “Sir” to his title. 

Mirvis will be named a “knight commander of the order of the British Empire,” according to King Charles’ New Year Honours list. Since 1890, the U.K. has announced new knighthoods and other chivalric honors only twice a year, on New Year’s Day and on the birthday of the ruling monarch, which in the past was April 21 for Queen Elizabeth II but going forward will be Nov. 14 for King Charles III. 

“I am enormously honoured and deeply humbled by this award. It will be particularly moving for me to receive this award from His Majesty The King, in his first year as our monarch,” Mirvis said, according to the Jewish Chronicle.

Though Mirvis’ most recent predecessors, Jonathan Sacks and Immanuel Jakobovits, had also received knighthoods during their terms as chief rabbi, the title has not always been a given. 

King Charles’ list noted Mirvis’ work in the field of interfaith dialogue and his advocacy for Uyghur Muslims suffering under oppressive policies in China. The list also noted Mirvis’ efforts to make the Orthodox world more inclusive of women and LGBTQ Jews. 

“He has been an advocate for greater inclusivity in Orthodox Jewish life, appointing Britain’s first female halachic adviser and establishing greater opportunities for female leadership and scholarship,” the list noted. “In the field of education, the Chief Rabbi has championed the cause of faith schools and Jewish education and issued a guide on the well-being of LGBT+ pupils in Orthodox Jewish schools — the first of its kind anywhere in the world.”

Maurice Ostro, vice president of The Council of Christians and Jews, a British volunteer group, said the honor “underlines how the establishment has started to recognise the importance of interfaith engagement as well as the vital contributions of our faith communities and the important role they play in making our country a truly great Britain.”

Alongside Mirvis, several other British Jews received honors on the list, including Vernon Bogdanor, a noted political scientist; British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons; television presenter Rachel Riley; Julian Lewis, a member of parliament since 1997; and Marie van der Zyl, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

“This is a true honour and a great surprise. It is a tribute to all the work we do at the Board of Deputies to represent and advocate for our Jewish community,” van der Zyl said. according to the Jewish Chronicle.

ס׳איז בכלל ניט געװען ענלעך צו דעם חסידישן שטײגער זאָגן ניגונים און טאַנצן אין קאַראַהאָד — אָדער צו הײַנטצײַטיקער קלעזמער־מוזיק װאָס איז ממשיך אױף עפּעס אַן אופֿן די אַמאָליקע קולטור־ירושה. אַלס גאַסטזינגערינס זײַנען אױפֿגעטראָטן אַ גרופּע פֿרױען װאָס האָבן געזונגען חב״ד־ניגונים. אָט דער טײל פֿון קאָנצערט איז מיר צום מערסטן געפֿעלן געװאָרן, כאָטש אױך דאָ װאָלט מען זיך, לױט מײַנע השׂגות, בעסער באַגאַנגען אָן דער הילכיקער באַגלײטונג פֿון אַ גאַנצן אַנסאַמבל, בלױז מיט די שטימען פֿון די זינגערינס.

צוריק אין צפֿון־ברוקלין. פֿרײַטיק־צו־נאַכטס הײבט זיך אָן דער פֿעסטיװאַל „ייִדיש ניו־יאָרק“ מיט אַ דאַװנען אין דער „קײן־סטריט־שול“. דאָרט האָט מען מקבל־פּנים געװען די מלכּה שבת מיט אַ טשיקאַװען געמיש פֿון ייִדישע לידער און שטיקער פֿון דאַװנען. די לידער האָבן לאַװ דװקא געהאַט אַ שײַכות צו קבלת־שבת אָדער צו תּפֿילה בכלל. אײן ליד,  „שנירעלע פּערעלע“, האָט לכל־הפּחות אַ שײַכות צו דער בענקשאַפֿט נאָך משיח־צדקינו, כאָטש מע זינגט עס געװײנטלעך בעת מע מאַכט הבֿדלה. דאָ האָט מען עס צונױפֿגעפּאָרט מיטן פּיוט „לכה דודי“. פֿון אַ חבֿרטע האָבן מיר זיך דערװוּסט אַז אַזאַ מין מישמאַש איז טיפּיש פֿאַר דער ליבעראַלער באַװעגונג, „רינועל“ („באַנײַוּּנג“) בײַ אַמעריקאַנער ייִדן.

„ייִדיש ניו־יאָרק“ האָט אונדז אױך מזכּה געװען מיט אַ גאָר אױסערגעװײנטלעכן קאָנצערט פֿון זאָיִ אַקואַ און מײַקל װינאָגראַד מיט זײערע אַנסאַמבלען. צו ערשט האָבן געשפּילט אַקואַ מיט חבֿרים. זײ האָבן מיטן קאָנצערט אױך געפּראַװעט אַ שׂמחה לכּבֿוד דעם אַרױסלאָזן אַ נײַע פּלאַטע א״נ „אין װאַלד אַרײַן“ (אַרױס בײַ אַהרן בענדיטשעס „באָרשט־ביט“). אַקואַ איז אַרױסגעטראָטן ניט נאָר װי אַן אױסגעצײכנטע פֿידלערין, נאָר אױך װי אַ קאָמפּאָזיטאָרין. ס׳האָט זיך געלאָזט הערן די השפּעה פֿון די אַנדערהאַלבן יאָר װאָס זי האָט געלעבט און זיך געלערנט אין טראַנסילװאַניע, אַ „כּישופֿדיקער“ געגנט, װי זי האָט געזאָגט.

בעת דער צװײטער העלפֿט פֿונעם קאָנצערט האָט דער קלאַרנעטיסט מײַקל װינאָגראַד צוזאַמען מיט אַ כּלי־זמר־קאַפּעליע געשפּילט מוזיק װאָס ער האָט אױסקאָמפּאָנירט אין יאַנואַר 2022. יעדע סװיטע האָט ער אױסגעפֿאַרטיקט אין משך פֿון אײן טאָג. פֿאַר נאַכט האָט ער אַרױסגעשיקט די פּאַרטיטורן צו קאָלעגעס גוטע־פֿרײַנד װאָס האָבן געדאַרפֿט זיך רעקאָרדירן במשך אַ שעה צװײ כּדי װינאָגראַד זאָל דערנאָך קענען צונױפֿשטוקעװען פֿון דעם אַ גאַנצע זאַך און פֿאַרענדיקן דאָס װערק ביז האַלבע נאַכט. אַפֿילו אױב לכתּחילה האָט ער אָנגעשריבן די דאָזיקע זאַכן ניט פֿאַר אַן עכטן קאָנצערט, פּנים־אל־פּנים, האָט זיך דערפֿון באַקומען אַ נישקשהדיקער אָװנט פֿון קלעזמערײַ, טאַקע פֿון ערשטן ראַנג.

דעם לעצטן אָװנט פֿאַרן אָפּפֿלי צוריק קײן אײראָפּע בין איך געװען אױף נאָך אַ קאָנצערט פֿון „ייִדיש ניו־יאָרק“, אַ קאָנצערט אין אָנדענק פֿון דער ייִדיש־זינגערין און כּלל־טוערין חנה קופּער ז״ל. אױף יענעם קאָנצערט האָט מען אױך צוגעטײלט די פּרעמיע א״נ פֿון ח. קופּער — אַן אױסצײכענונג פֿאַרן „חלומען אױף ייִדיש“. די הײַיאָריקע בעל־שׂמחהטע איז די קאָלומניסטין און שרײַבערין רחל קפֿריסין. אי די לױב־רעדנערין, דזשעניפֿער יאָנג, אי קפֿריסין אַלײן, האָבן גערעדט װעגן „ייִדיש־מאַקסימאַליזם“ און „אַרבעטן טאַקע אױף ייִדיש“. אי־הכי, אױב טאַקע אַזױ, שװימט אױף די קשיא, פֿאַר װאָס איז אין משך פֿונעם גאַנצן אָװנט קײן אײן רעדנער ניט אַרױסגעטראָטן מיט אַ װאָרט אױף ייִדיש? פֿון דעם דרינגען מיר, אַז מע טײלט צו די פּרעמיע דער עיקר טאַקע פֿאַרן חלומען אױף ייִדיש — ניט דװקא פֿאַר שעפֿערישקײט אױף ייִדיש גופֿא.

צוריקגעשמועסט, איז דאָס געװען אַ מחיהדיקער קאָנצערט מיט ייִדישע לידער, „נײַע קװײטן אױף אַן אַלטן בױם“. אײנער פֿון די נײַסטע „קװײטן“ (בלומען), װאָס האָט ספּעציעל אױסגענומען בײַם עולם, איז געװען דאָס ליד „װאָס איז װיכטיק“. דאָס ייִדישע ליד, געשאַפֿן פֿון ר׳ אפֿרים װאַקסמאַן, הײבט זיך אָן מיט די װערטער „װיכטיק איז אַ שבת־קודש“, און יעדע סטראָפֿע ענדיקט זיך מיט די װערטער „מע טאָר ניט װערן צעמישט“. אײַראַ טעמפּל האָט אױסגעזונגען װאַקסמאַנס ליד און צװישן די סטראָפֿעס עס אָפּגעטײַטשט אױף ענגליש. זײַן פּירוש איז אָבער ניט נאָר געװען אַ סך־הכּל און אױסטײַטשונג פֿונעם ייִדישן טעקסט, נאָר אױך אַ קריטיק קעגן דעם פּאַטריאַרכאַט און די הערשנדיקע באַגריפֿן פֿון מין. אַחוץ דעם איז צװישן די נײַע שאַפֿונגען אױך געװען אַ ליד װאָס קפֿריסין אַלײן האָט איבערגעזעצט פֿון ענגליש אױף ייִדיש: „קום צו מיר“, געזונגען פֿון סאַשע לוריא.

איך דאַרף זיך מודה זײַן אַז איך האָב, אױף אַן אמת, הנאה געהאַט פֿון קפֿריסינס קלוגער און װיציקער רעדע, אַפֿילו ס׳איז, בעוונותינו, ניט געװען אױף ייִדיש. זי האָט אונטערגעשטראָכן אַז ס׳איז װיכטיק, דער ייִדישיסטישער ציבור זאָל בלײַבן אָפֿן פֿאַר נײַע, פֿריש צוגעקומענע ליבהאָבער פֿון דער שפּראַך, װאָס הײבן ערשט אָן זיך צו לערנען װעגן ייִדיש און ייִדישקײט. דאָ איז כּדאַי צו באַמערקן אַז ממשותדיקע קולטור־טעטיקײט אױף ייִדיש און אָפֿנקײט פֿאַרן ברײטערן עולם קענען גײן האַנט בײַ האַנט, װי ס׳װײַזט דער בײַשפּיל פֿונעם פּאַריזער ייִדיש־צענטער.

The doctoral student accused in the November stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students will soon be transferred to Idaho to face murder charges there, after he agreed at a Tuesday court hearing in Pennsylvania not to fight extradition, local media reported.

Bryan Kohberger, 28, was taken into custody last Thursday in Monroe County in eastern Pennsylvania, where he was visiting family. Kohberger has been working toward a criminal justice PhD degree at Washington State University, located near the University of Idaho campus.

Jason LaBar, his public defender in Monroe County, told NBC’s “Today” show on Tuesday that Kohberger believes he will be exonerated. He faces four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary.

The crime stunned the small college town of Moscow in northwestern Idaho, where the four victims – three women and one man – were found dead on the morning of Nov. 13 in the women’s house.

The victims – Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho – all suffered multiple stab wounds, according to authorities. Chapin was Kernodle’s boyfriend.

Two other female roommates in the house at the time of the killings were unharmed, apparently having slept through the attack.

Kernodle and Chapin had attended a party the night before, while best friends Mogen and Goncalves had visited a local bar and food truck, with all four returning to the house before 2 a.m. Authorities have said the slayings occurred between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive but have said they are confident Kohberger is responsible for all four killings. A probable cause affidavit that lays out the basis for the charges will offer additional details, prosecutors have said, but it remains under seal until Kohberger is physically in Idaho.

Wall Street’s main indexes closed lower on the first trading day of 2023 with big drags from Tesla and Apple, while investors worried about the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate hiking path as they awaited minutes from its December meeting.

Shares in electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) hit their lowest level since August 2020 and put pressure on the consumer discretionary sector (.SPLRCD) after missing Wall Street estimates for quarterly deliveries.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) shares sank, with the iPhone maker hitting its lowest level since June 2021, after a report from Nikkei Asia pointed to weaker demand. In addition, an analyst downgraded their rating of the stock due to production cuts in COVID-19-hit China.

The energy sector (.SPNY), which logged stellar gains in 2022, started the year in the red as oil prices fell on bleak business activity data from China and concerns about the outlook for the global economy. .

The main U.S. stock indexes had ended 2022 with their steepest annual losses since 2008 following the Fed’s fastest pace of rate hikes since the 1980s to stamp out decades-high inflation.

“Even though the calendar has changed, a lot of the main issues for the market have not, specifically with the Federal Reserve tightening monetary policy as it’s still concerned about inflation,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Independent Advisor Alliance in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“We’re in a bear market. Negative is the default reaction to everything,” he said. “Until the Fed really changes their tone, it’s an uphill battle for the market.”

Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles, also cited worries about Apple’s demand stemming as well as Tesla’s sharp decline for the broader market’s weakness on Tuesday.

According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 (.SPX) lost 15.43 points, or 0.40%, to end at 3,824.07 points, while the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) lost 78.21 points, or 0.75%, to 10,388.28. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) fell 12.33 points, or 0.04%, to 33,134.92.

The S&P 500 had shed 19.4% in 2022, marking a roughly $8 trillion decline in market capitalization, while the Nasdaq fell 33.1%, dragged down by growth stocks.

Investors on Wednesday will closely monitor the minutes of the Fed’s December policy meeting, when the central bank raised interest rates by 50 basis points after four straight 75 basis points hikes and signaled rates could stay higher for longer.

Other economic data due this week includes the ISM manufacturing report, also on Wednesday, and December’s jobs report on Friday.

Weakness in the labor market could give the Fed a reason to ease its monetary policy tightening, but the data so far has shown that market remains tight despite rate hikes.

Money market participants see a 68% chance the Fed will raise the benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 4.50% to 4.75% in February, with the rates peaking at 4.98% by June. .

Republican Kevin McCarthy lost two votes for speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, as hardline conservatives representing less than one-tenth of his party caucus rebelled against him, leaving the new Republican majority in turmoil.

In an embarrassing beginning to what could prove to be a brutal showdown between hardliners and the overwhelming majority of House Republicans, McCarthy twice fell short of the 218-vote majority needed to succeed Democrat Nancy Pelosi as speaker. It was the first time in a century that the House failed to elect a speaker on the first vote.

Lawmakers moved on to a third ballot. McCarthy had served as the House minority leader and sought to become speaker, a position second in the line of succession to the U.S. presidency, only to draw strong opposition from his party’s right flank.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries outran McCarthy both times by 212 to 203 votes, as 19 Republicans opted for different candidates. A majority of those voting, not a plurality, is needed to determine a speaker.

In the second vote, popular conservative Representative Jim Jordan sought to rally support for California Republican McCarthy, only to find himself put forward as a nominee by McCarthy opponent Matt Gaetz of Florida.

“We need to rally around him,” Jordan had said in an impassioned speech on the House floor. “I think Kevin McCarthy’s the right guy to lead us.”

Jordan, 58, is a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and a co-founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

A former college wrestler who represents a congressional district in Ohio, Jordan had been floated as a possible alternative candidate for speaker but instead supported McCarthy while preparing to oversee the House Judiciary Committee’s investigation of the Justice Department and FBI under President Joe Biden.

It was a disconcerting start to the new majority for McCarthy and highlights the challenges Republicans could face over the next two years, heading into the 2024 presidential election. Their slim majority gives greater clout to a small group of hardliners, who want to focus on dealing defeat to Democrats and pushing various investigations.

Republicans won a narrow 222-212 majority in November’s midterm election, meaning that McCarthy – or any candidate for speaker – will need to unify a fractious caucus to win the gavel. Democrats hold a slim majority in the Senate.

McCarthy’s hardline opponents are concerned that he is less deeply invested in the culture wars and partisan rivalries that have dominated the House – and even more so since Trump’s White House years.

Before the vote, McCarthy tried to persuade the holdouts during a closed-door party meeting, vowing to stay in the race until he gets the necessary votes, but many participants emerged from the gathering undaunted.

A protracted speaker election could undermine House Republican hopes of moving forward quickly on priorities including investigations of Biden’s administration and family, as well as legislative priorities involving the economy, U.S. energy independence and border security.

A standoff would leave the House largely paralyzed and could force lawmakers to consider another candidate. In addition to Jordan, incoming Majority Leader Steve Scalise was seen as a possible candidate.

It was not clear whether McCarthy, who has the support of a wide majority of his caucus, would have the support to overcome the hard-line opposition and win the speakership. He once before, in 2015, tried for the speakership and failed amid conservative opposition.

McCarthy has spent his adult life in politics – as a congressional staffer, then state legislator before being elected to the House in 2006. As speaker, McCarthy would be well placed to frustrate Biden’s legislative ambitions.

But any Republican speaker will have the tough task of managing a House Republican caucus moving ever rightward, with uncompromising tendencies and – at least among some lawmakers – close allegiances to Trump.

Tuesday’s vote marked the first time in 100 years that a nominee has not succeeded to the House speakership on the first ballot. The record number of voting rounds to elect a House speaker is 133 over a two-month period in the 1850s.

The Democrats picked Jeffries to serve as minority leader after Pelosi, the first woman to serve as speaker, announced that she would step down from her leadership role. She will remain in office as a representative.

Opponents of Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s bid for the House speakership are digging in after a tense discussion on the House floor between Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

The pair’s conspicuous exchange in the back of the chamber on the first day of the 118th Congress was caught on C-SPAN — and noted by many members in the building. Thanks to Gaetz and his far-right allies, McCarthy, a California Republican, failed to win the speakership on the first round of voting.

Gaetz told Ocasio-Cortez that McCarthy has been telling Republicans that he’ll be able to cut a deal with Democrats to vote present, enabling him to win a majority of those present and voting, according to Ocasio-Cortez. She told Gaetz that wasn’t happening, and also double-checked with Democratic party leadership, confirming there’d be no side deal.

“McCarthy was suggesting he could get Dems to walk away to lower his threshold,” Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept of her conversation with Gaetz on McCarthy’s failed ploy. “And I fact checked and said absolutely not.”

Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York won all 212 of his party’s votes, a show of unity that, if it holds, requires McCarthy to win over all but four of his colleagues.

Gaetz, who has shown a willingness to break with the GOP establishment, said that his crew of McCarthy opponents was dug in and would continue to resist him, adding that McCarthy has been threatening opponents with loss of committee assignments. A private gathering of Republicans ahead of the vote had been heated, multiple sources said. (Gaetz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

McCarthy and Gaetz presented their positions in dueling press conferences Tuesday morning. McCarthy said that Gaetz and his allies had requested plum committee assignments in exchange for supporting his speaker bid. McCarthy also accused Gaetz of telling Republican members that he was willing to elect Jeffries as speaker rather than accede to McCarthy. Gaetz told reporters that he and his allies didn’t trust McCarthy.

Ahead of the second round of voting, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who won six votes for speaker in the first round, nominated McCarthy again. Then Gaetz rose and nominated Jordan. All 19 McCarthy opponents voted for Jordan in the second round, leaving McCarthy again at 203 votes — 15 short of what he needed.

Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz. another McCarthy opponent, also huddled with Ocasio-Cortez in the chamber, inquiring about the possibility of adjourning the House. (Gosar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

In the first round, McCarthy won just 203 votes, losing 19 of his colleagues. McCarthy has been insistent on remaining in session, as have his opponents. Adjourning without choosing a speaker would be embarrassing to Republicans but might also give time for McCarthy to break the opposition one by one.

Ocasio-Cortez was noncommittal on the tack, as an adjournment strategy would require party leadership.

NEW YORK (Reuters)—Sam Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to criminal charges that he cheated investors in his now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange, causing billions of dollars in losses in what prosecutors have called an epic fraud.

The 30-year-old defendant entered his plea through his lawyer to eight criminal counts, including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, before U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan federal court.

Kaplan set an Oct. 2 trial date. A federal prosecutor, Danielle Sassoon, estimated that a trial could take four weeks, and said the government will soon turn over hundreds of thousands of documents of evidence to defense lawyers.

Bankman-Fried is accused of looting billions of dollars in FTX customer deposits to support his Alameda Research hedge fund, buy real estate and make millions of dollars in political contributions.

It is common for criminal defendants to initially plead not guilty. They may change their pleas later.

Bankman-Fried, now clean-shaven, sported a blue suit, white shirt and dotted blue tie and carried a backpack into the courthouse.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate could face up to 115 years in prison if convicted.

Bankman-Fried rode a boom in the value of bitcoin and other digital assets to build a net worth of an estimated $26 billion and become an influential political donor in the United States.

But FTX collapsed in early November after a wave of withdrawals and declared bankruptcy on Nov. 11, wiping out Bankman-Fried’s fortune. He later said he had $100,000 in his bank account.

PARENTS RECEIVE THREATS

Bankman-Fried was extradited last month from the Bahamas, where he lived and where the exchange was based.

Since his release on a $250 million bond on Dec. 22, Bankman-Fried has been subject to electronic monitoring and required to live with his parents, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, both professors at Stanford Law School in California.

Kaplan granted Bankman-Fried’s request not to publicize the names of two additional co-signers for the bond.

Lawyers for Bankman-Fried have said his parents, who co-signed the bond, have been receiving physical threats since FTX’s collapse, and that other co-signers might face similar harassment unless their names were kept secret.

The judge also imposed a new bail condition, saying Bankman-Fried cannot access FTX or Alameda assets.

Prosecutors’ case was strengthened by last month’s guilty pleas of two of Bankman-Fried’s closest associates.

Caroline Ellison, who was Alameda’s chief executive, and Gary Wang, FTX’s former chief technology officer, pleaded guilty to seven and four criminal charges, respectively, and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

Bankman-Fried, Ellison and Wang were also sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Ellison and Wang settled those civil cases.

FTX’s new chief executive, John Ray, known for his work on energy company Enron Corp’s bankruptcy, has said FTX was run by “grossly inexperienced” and unsophisticated people.
