After Jan. 6: Congress born of chaos ends in achievement

WASHINGTON (AP) — The 117th Congress opened with the unfathomable Jan. 6, 2021, mob siege of the Capitol and is closing with unprecedented federal criminal referrals of the former president over the insurrection — all while conducting one of the most consequential legislative sessions in recent memory.

Lawmakers are wrapping up the two-year session having found surprisingly common ground on big bills, despite enduring bitter political divisions that haunt the halls, and the country, after the bloody Capitol attack by supporters of the defeated president, Donald Trump, that threatened democracy.

The Congress passed monumental legislation — including a bill making one of the most substantial infrastructure investments in a generation and another federally protecting same-sex and interracial marriages. It rallied the U.S. to support Ukraine in the war against Russia. Senators confirmed the nation’s first Black woman, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, to the Supreme Court.

Among the rare moments of agreement: passage of the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, making lynching a federal hate crime, after more than 120 years and some 200 failed efforts to pass such legislation.

In many ways, the chaos of the Capitol attack created a new coalition in Congress — lawmakers who want to show America can govern. With President Joe Biden in the White House, the Democrats who controlled Washington found new partners in a wing of the Republican Party eager to push past the Trump years and the former president’s repeated lies about a stolen election that led to the Capitol siege.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., compared this session to the Lyndon Johnson and Franklin Roosevelt administrations that produced some of the nation’s most lasting laws.

“These two years in the Senate and House — in the Congress — were either the most productive in 50 years Great Society, or most productive in 100 years since the New Deal,” he said.

And yet the legislative session that kicked off with the historic second impeachment of Trump for inciting the insurrection ended its final days with deeply felt partisanship.

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy unleashed a dark and vitriolic attack on colleagues Friday ahead of voting on the $1.7 trillion spending bill to keep government running another year.

“One of the most shameful acts I’ve ever seen,” McCarthy said, as many members voted by proxy.

McCarthy, who is struggling to take over as House speaker in the new year when Republicans have control, lashed out at the two retiring senators, a Democrat and a Republican, who partnered with House Democrats to craft the bill. He named names.

“I feel sad for you,” McCarthy said, “but more importantly, the damage you’ve done to America.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in what was likely her last speech as Democratic leader, delivered bright holiday wishes and a cutting response.

“It was sad to hear the minority leader earlier say that this legislation is ‘the most shameful’ thing to be seen on the House floor in this Congress. I can’t help but wonder had he forgotten January 6?”

Congress and the country have confronted one of the more divisive eras in American politics, partisan chasms scholars say unlike any seen since the middle of the 19th century, around the time of the Civil War.

Democrats had control these past two years, but just barely. The Senate was evenly split this session, 50-50, for the longest period in modern memory. The House’s slim margin will be similar in the next session, but in Republican rather than Democratic control after the midterm elections.

Yet, as the branch of the federal government closest to the people, the Congress found its way to carry on, despite COVID-19 pandemic restrictions that kept the Capitol partly closed and menacing security threats to lawmakers. Pelosi’s husband was brutally attacked in their home by an assailant who said he was intent on breaking the speaker’s kneecaps.

Together, lawmakers sent Biden the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill that invested in the nation’s roads, bridges and public works, and another big package to invest in semi-conductor industry and scientific research in the U.S.

Democrats alone approved a massive coronavirus aid package that put money in Americans’ pockets, supported business and funded free vaccines, a $1.9 trillion deal Republicans rejected as wasteful spending and blamed for fueling soaring inflation.

While Biden’s promised “Build Back Better” fell apart, his party regrouped to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which that may not have curbed rising prices but delivered the nation’s biggest investment yet in efforts to curb climate change and capped monthly insulin prices for seniors at $35 starting in January.

The first bill to curb gun violence, though modest compared to advocates’ demands, became law after the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas — nearly a full decade after the Sandy Hook school shooting that killed 20 children failed at the time to move lawmakers to act.

As the worst war in Europe since World War II broke out, Congress embraced a little-known leader, welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy twice — first to address lawmakers remotely at the start of Russia’s invasion and with a daring in-person speech this past week that echoed Winston Churchill’s 1941 visit to Congress.

The latest $45 billion tranche of Ukrainian aid could very well be the last for now, once Republicans who oppose the overseas spending take control in the new year as the focus puts a priority on America’s needs at home.

And after an 18-month investigation into attack on the Capitol, the panel formed by Pelosi after Congress failed to stand up an independent commission released its 814-page report finding “one man” was responsible for the mob siege. Trump summoned the crowd to Washington and urged supporters to “fight like hell” for his presidency as Congress was meeting to certify Biden’s election.

Jan. 6 committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said the report provides a “roadmap to justice” and the panel took the unprecedented step of referring the former president for prosecution.

Among the committee’s 11 recommendations to shore up democracy, Congress took a first step by passing the Electoral Count Act to bolster the way Congress tallies the presidential vote.

Past sessions of Congress have produced big bills: Republicans approved the $2 trillion tax cuts package with Trump’s signature in 2017; Democrats ushered the Affordable Care Act to law with Barack Obama in 2010.

While Schumer said he wants to work again with Republican leader Mitch McConnell for more bipartisan bills in the new year, the House GOP leader has other plans.

“In 11 days this all changes,” McCarthy said Friday. “The new direction is coming.”

We shouldn’t be too surprised about much of the contents of the House Select Committee’s final report on the January 6 insurrection that ended in criminal referrals for Donald Trump and his cronies. This man was elected to high office for the benefit of the people. Of course, we know he really did it to benefit himself, but he could have at least pretended to care about the people he represented-all of the people, regardless of political leaning or affiliation. Trump showed once and for all on January 6 that his “presidency” was all about him.

Some of the people who worked beside Trump tried to intervene, even as Trump sat on his ass and watched the horror unfold. Cassidy Hutchinson testified that Trump knew these thugs were armed and still encouraged them to march on the Capitol because he knew exactly what they had planned, and he was all for it. As the debacle unfolded, Trump was warned as soon as he returned, and Pat Cipollone intimated that members of Trump’s administration tried for more than two hours to get Trump to call off his goons. He did nothing. Further, Sarah Matthews revealed that Kayleigh McEnany told her that Trump had no interest in encouraging a peaceful protest, which is confirmed by a text from Trump aide Robert Gabriel: “Potus Im sure is loving this.” Putting the final nail in this coffin, Ben Sasse suggested that Trump “was confused about why other people on his team weren’t as excited as he was.” They weren’t excited because what happened that day was wrong. Trump saw it as positive reinforcement of his attempts to overturn the election, while people with sense knew that his attempts to overturn the election were illegal. He was willing to let the Capitol be destroyed and lawmakers hurt or killed so that he could talk about how much his followers love him. Nothing else mattered.

Trump knew what he was doing was illegal. Their claims of voter fraud were false, and they knew it. Hutchinson testified that Trump knew he had lost and that he told Mark Meadows: “I don’t want people to know we lost, Mark. This is embarrassing.” Further, White House lawyer Eric Herschmann and Pence aid Greg Jacob testified that Eastman and Giuliani knew that the plan to challenge the vote was illegal, but they proceeded with it anyway, with Trump’s blessing, making them all co-conspirators in fraud.

All of this turmoil was created for no other purpose than to make Trump feel good about himself after losing. He gave not one thought to the danger he put others in nor the long-term impact his lies and deceit would have on the country. Trump is not only a narcissist; he is a dangerous narcissist. Some believe he will never be brought to justice, but we will have to wait and see if there is enough evidence to make charges stick. If there is, Trump will be foregoing his 2024 run for the White House in favor of defending criminal charges.

“Catch Me If You Can” is a 2002 film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. It is about a con artist — the ultimate con artist. Based on a true story, the man cons his way through life, posing as everything from a doctor to a pilot to a Prosecutor.

He is VERY convincing. And people believe him. Many people believe him and fall for his schtick but not the able FBI agent on his trail. The movie shows the art of the con well. And that’s important. Con artists must always be dealt with. Why is nobody dealing with the con artist who just won a seat in the Republican party?

George Santos. George Santos is not a good con artist. He isn’t like the man in the film. And he was caught pretty quickly. And it’s all the Democrats’ fault. According to the media. I have never seen such a media smear job as what is going on now. George Santos — assuming that’s even his real name –has lied about:

Where he worked.

His marital status.

Where he graduated

Losing employees in the Pulse nightclub shooting. (This one is particularly evil.)

Having Jewish grandparents who fled Europe during the Holocaust.

His financial debt.

Running an animal charity.

Owning certain property.

Basically — just about everything of importance. Undoubtedly, this is a bad apple — the most rotten type. So one would think — that would be the story. Nope. Here is what the media is howling about: Why didn’t Democrats find this out? Where is their oppo research? How could Democrats not know?

What I’d like to say to the media is not suitable to print. So let me say this: Research costs money. This was a local race that was only decided as to candidates shortly before the midterms, and that’s because of all the Gerrymandering issues in New York.

There were some very sophisticated lies being told. To uncover all of them would have taken money. And time. A lot of time. And a whole lot of travel. The Democratic candidate did not have the time and money needed to investigate everything. How do I know this? Because he appeared on television and said so himself.

And some of the lies were out there. The media didn’t report on them. But that is not stopping the media. I’ve yet to hear many ask the most obvious question. Did the GOP know, and if not, why not? Don’t they vet their candidates? And why aren’t they speaking out?

Factbox: Power outages hit more than 500,000 in the U.S. due to storms

2022-12-24T22:46:23Z

A fierce winter storm gripped western New York on Friday (December 23), drastically reducing visibility in the city of Buffalo.

Over 500,000 homes and businesses were without power in the eastern half of the United States and Texas on Saturday as winter storms battered much of the country, according to data from PowerOutage.us.

U.S. utilities were working to restore power after the storms moved on from their service territories but some were still dealing with high winds.

The greatest numbers of outages were in the New England region, with 156,289 customers without power in Maine, followed by New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

During the Christmas weekend, storms are expected to bring blizzard conditions to the Great Lakes region, heavy rains followed by a flash freeze on the East Coast and wind gusts of 60 miles per hour (100 kph) and bitter cold as far south as the U.S.-Mexico border.

Here are the major outages by state:

Taliban bans female NGO staff, jeopardizing aid efforts

2022-12-24T22:04:48Z

Afghanistan’s Taliban-run administration on Saturday ordered all local and foreign NGOs to stop female employees from working, in a move the United Nations said would hit humanitarian operations just as winter grips a country already in economic crisis.

A letter from the economy ministry, confirmed by spokesperson Abdulrahman Habib, said female employees of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were not allowed to work until further notice because some had not adhered to the administration’s interpretation of Islamic dresscode for women.

It comes days after the administration ordered universities to close to women, prompting global condemnation and sparking some protests and heavy criticism inside Afghanistan.

Both decisions are the latest restrictions on women that are likely to undermine the Taliban-run administration’s efforts to gain international recognition and clear sanctions that are severely hampering the economy.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Twitter he was “deeply concerned” the move “will disrupt vital and life-saving assistance to millions,” adding: “Women are central to humanitarian operations around the world. This decision could be devastating for the Afghan people.”

Ramiz Alakbarov, the U.N. deputy special representative for Afghanistan and humanitarian coordinator, told Reuters that although the U.N. had not received the order, contracted NGOs carried out most of its activities and would be heavily impacted.

“Many of our programmes will be affected,” he said, because they need female staff to assess humanitarian need and identify beneficiaries, otherwise they will not be able to implement aid programs.

International aid agency AfghanAid said it was immediately suspending operations while it consulted with other organisations, and that other NGOs were taking similar actions.

The potential endangerment of aid programmes that millions of Afghans access comes when more than half the population relies on humanitarian aid, according to aid agencies, and during the mountainous nation’s coldest season.

“There’s never a right time for anything like this … but this particular time is very unfortunate because during winter time people are most in need and Afghan winters are very harsh,” said Alakbarov.

He said his office would consult with NGOs and U.N. agencies on Sunday and seek to meet with Taliban authorities for an explanation.

Aid workers say female workers are essential in a country where rules and cultural customs largely prevent male workers from delivering aid to female beneficiaries.

“An important principle of delivery of humanitarian aid is the ability of women to participate independently and in an unimpeded way in its distribution so if we can’t do it in a principled way then no donors will be funding any programs like that,” Alakbarov said.

When asked whether the rules directly included U.N. agencies, Habib said the letter applied to organisations under Afghanistan’s coordinating body for humanitarian organisations, known as ACBAR. That body does not include the U.N., but includes over 180 local and international NGOs.

Their licences would be suspended if they did not comply, the letter said.

Afghanistan’s struggling economy has tipped into crisis since the Taliban took over in 2021, with the country facing sanctions, cuts in development aid and a freeze in central bank assets.

A record 28 million Afghans are estimated to need humanitarian aid next year, according to AfghanAid.
