Nine Omicron symptoms affecting the fully vaccinated – and signs you may have it

SEI116521277.jpg?quality=75&width=1200&a

The UK appears to have just seen off its fifth wave of Covid-19 infections, although experts continue to fear that another could arrive this autumn once the weather turns unless proper precautions are taken.

The country saw a 43 per cent spike in coronavirus cases at the beginning of June, seemingly caused by people coming together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over the course of a four-day weekend.

Driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of Omicron – the strain that spread so rapidly across the UK in December 2021 and January 2022 before gradually falling away – cases continued to rise to a peak of around 4.6m cases in mid-July before gradually beginning to decline.

While August finds Britain in a much better place in terms of infections, closer to just 120,000 per day according to the ZOE Health Study, the recent spike was a timely reminder that Covid has not gone away and that we still need to be vigilant as new mutations continue to emerge around the world.

The approval of Moderna’s new Omicron-specific jab is a welcome development for the UK and the shot could end up playing a significant role in any further vaccine drives to come.

With that in mind, what follows is an overview of some of the most common symptoms associated with that variant and its offspring for the fully-vaccinated – and two early warning signs that you might have it.

Most common symptoms for the fully vaccinated

Researchers in Norway conducted a study interviewing 111 out of 117 guests to a party on 26 November 2021 where there was an Omicron outbreak.

Of the group interviewed, 66 had definitive cases of Covid and 15 had possible cases of the virus.

Of the 111 participants, 89 per cent had received two doses of an mRNA vaccine and none had received a booster shot.

According to the findings published in the infectious disease and epidemiology journal Eurosurveillance, there were eight key symptoms experienced by the group of fully-vaccinated partygoers.

These were: a persistent cough, runny nose, fatigue, sore throat, headache, muscle pain, fever and sneezing.

An associate practitioner administers a coronavirus vaccine at Elland Road in Leeds

The study found that coughs, runny noses and fatigue were among the most common symptoms in the vaccinated individuals while sneezing and fever were least common.

Public health experts also added nausea to this list of symptoms in vaccinated people who have contracted the Omicron variant.

Although the vaccine protects against the more serious risks of the virus, it is still possible to contract Covid even if you have both jabs and a booster shot.

The mild nature of the symptoms makes it hard for people to distinguish the virus from a common cold.

But, according to Professor Tim Spector of the Zoe Covid project, around 50 per cent of “‘new colds’ currently are, in fact, Covid”.

Two early warning signs you may have Omicron

Experts also suggest there are two distinct symptoms that could be a sign a positive test is around the corner: fatigue and spells of dizziness or fainting.

Commuters with face coverings leave a train

More than simply feeling tired, fatigue can translate to bodily pain by causing sore or weak muscles, headaches and even blurry vision and loss of appetite.

Dr Angelique Coetzee, a private practitioner and chair of the South African Medical Association, told Good Morning Britain that fatigue was one of the main symptoms of Omicron when the variant broke out in South Africa.

In fact, 40 per cent of women reported they struggled with fatigue due to Covid compared to one-third of men, according to a poll by WebMD that asked users how often they had suffered fatigue from 23 December 2021 to 4 January 2022.

Dizziness or fainting is the second sign that you may have Omicron.

A report from Germany recently suggested that there could be a link between fainting spells and Omicron after doctors in Berlin found that Covid was triggering recurrent dizzy spells in a 35-year-old patient admitted to hospital.

German newspaper Arztezeitung said that the doctors could see a “clear connection” between the infection and the fainting spells.

A federal judge in Florida gave notice on Saturday of her “preliminary intent” to appoint an independent arbiter, known as a special master, to conduct a review of the highly sensitive documents that were seized by the F.B.I. this month during a search of Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald J. Trump’s club and residence in Palm Beach.

In an unusual action that fell short of a formal order, the judge, Aileen M. Cannon of the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Florida, signaled that she was inclined to agree with the former president and his lawyers that a special master should be appointed to review the seized documents.

But Judge Cannon, who was appointed by Mr. Trump in 2020, set a hearing for arguments in the matter for Thursday in the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach — not the one in Fort Pierce, Fla., where she typically works.

On Friday night, only hours after a redacted version of the affidavit used to obtain the warrant for the search of Mar-a-Lago was released, Mr. Trump’s lawyers filed court papers to Judge Cannon reiterating their request for a special master to weed out documents taken in the search that could be protected by executive privilege.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers had initially asked Judge Cannon on Monday to appoint a special master, but their filing was so confusing and full of bluster that the judge requested clarifications on several basic legal questions. The notice by Judge Cannon on Saturday was seen as something of a victory in Mr. Trump’s circle.

Card 1 of 4

The release on Aug. 26 of a partly redacted affidavit used by the Justice Department to justify its search of former President Donald J. Trump’s Florida residence included information that provides greater insight into the ongoing investigation into how he handled documents he took with him from the White House. Here are the key takeaways:

The government tried to retrieve the documents for more than a year. The affidavit showed that the National Archives asked Mr. Trump as early as May 2021 for files that needed to be returned. In January, the agency was able to collect 15 boxes of documents. The affidavit included a letter from May 2022 showing that Trump’s lawyers knew that he might be in possession of classified materials and that the Justice Department was investigating the matter.

The material included highly classified documents. The F.B.I. said it had examined the 15 boxes Mr. Trump had returned to the National Archives in January and that all but one of them contained documents that were marked classified. The markings suggested that some documents could compromise human intelligence sources and that others were related to foreign intercepts collected under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Prosecutors are concerned about obstruction and witness intimidation. To obtain the search warrant, the Justice Department had to lay out possible crimes to a judge, and obstruction of justice was among them. In a supporting document, the Justice Department said it had “well-founded concerns that steps may be taken to frustrate or otherwise interfere with this investigation if facts in the affidavit were prematurely disclosed.”

A different federal judge, Bruce E. Reinhart, a magistrate judge in West Palm Beach, ordered the unsealing of the warrant affidavit. The document said, among other things, that the Justice Department wanted to search Mar-a-Lago to ensure the return of highly classified documents that Mr. Trump had removed from the White House, including some that department officials believed could jeopardize “clandestine human sources” who worked undercover gathering intelligence.

Special masters are not uncommon in criminal investigations that include the seizure by the government of disputed materials that could be protected by attorney-client privilege. A special master was appointed, for example, after the F.B.I. raided the office of Mr. Trump’s longtime personal lawyer Michael D. Cohen in 2018 and took away evidence that Mr. Cohen and Mr. Trump claimed should have been kept from investigators because of the nature of their professional relationship.

In the case of the search of Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s lawyers have argued that some of the documents taken by the F.B.I. could be shielded not by attorney-client privilege, but rather by executive privilege, a vestige of Mr. Trump’s service as president. But legal scholars — and some judges — have expressed skepticism that former presidents can unilaterally assert executive privilege over materials related to their time in office once they leave the White House.

In December, for example, a federal appeals court in Washington ruled that, despite his attempts to invoke executive privilege, Mr. Trump had to turn over White House records related to the attack on the Capitol to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot.

In her notice on Saturday, Judge Cannon gave the Justice Department until Tuesday to file a response to Mr. Trump’s request. The judge also instructed prosecutors to send her under seal “a more detailed receipt” specifying the items that were seized by federal agents during the search of Mar-a-Lago on Aug. 8. As part of their initial request, Mr. Trump’s lawyers had asked for a complete inventory of what was taken, arguing that the receipt the F.B.I. had given them was insufficient.

Garland requests Trump’s Mar-a-Lago search warrant to be unsealed
Attorney General Merrick Garland said he personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant on former President Donald Trump’s property.
  • Federal charges under the Espionage Act used to justify Trump search are rare.
  • Investigators questioning Trump aides about handling records could build a case, experts say
  • Prosecutors weigh evidence to bring charges against potential for revealing secrets.

WASHINGTON – Criminal statutes cited by the Justice Department in the search of Donald Trump’s Florida estate for mishandled documents are rarely prosecuted, but legal experts say investigators may still be building a criminal case rather than simply retrieving classified records.

The FBI recovered 11 sets of “secret” and “top secret” records from Mar-a-Lago during the unprecedented search of a former president’s property. Authorities sought evidence of potential violations for mishandling defense documents, obstruction of justice and the Espionage Act.

Beyond recovering the documents, legal experts said reports of authorities interviewing Trump aides about whether documents were declassified suggest they continue to gather evidence to build a potential criminal case against Trump himself.

“I’m convinced they are building a case to determine if they can bring charges against Trump,” said Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor now at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner. “You just aren’t going to do that if your goal is to just primarily secure the documents and move on.”

Will Trump aides face charges?: Trump aides unlikely to face charges on their own in Mar-a-Lago probe, former prosecutors say

Paul Rosenzweig, a former federal prosecutor and senior counsel on the Whitewater investigation of President Bill Clinton, also said prosecutors wouldn’t pursue witnesses about Trump’s reputed standing order for declassification of documents if not to build a case.

“If they just wanted the paper back, they wouldn’t be doing that,” said Rosenzweig, who now manages Red Branch Consulting for cybersecurity. “Doing that means that they’re trying to block off defenses and lock people in.”

Bradley Moss, a national-security lawyer, predicted Friday after reading the redacted affidavit that Trump would be indicted. Lawrence Tribe, a professor emeritus at Harvard Law School, said Attorney General Merrick Garland would have to prosecute Trump under the three statutes cited in the search warrant in order to uphold the rule of law.

“We have crossed the Rubicon,” Tribe said in a tweet.

Investigators weigh carelessness against negligence

The investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of private email while serving as secretary of state was a touchstone case that legal experts cited in how prosecutors will weigh the evidence against Trump.

The FBI investigated 30,000 Clinton emails for whether her system improperly transferred or stored classified information. The probe found 110 emails contained classified information, including eight chains of messages with “top secret” information, according to then-FBI Director James Comey.

But after a review of similar cases, Comey called Clinton’s behavior “extremely careless,” but not “grossly negligent.” Comey said no criminal charges were appropriate because of a lack of willful mishandling of information, disloyalty to the United States or efforts to obstruct justice.

Daniel Richman, a former federal prosecutor who is now a professor at Columbia Law School, said the Clinton case illustrated that the nature of the documents and how they were handled will be factors in whether prosecutors pursue a case.

“It was the difference between just having documents inappropriately and making use of them,” said Richman, who doesn’t assume Trump will be charged.

How were other classified document cases handled?

Charges are relatively rare under the statutes cited in the search warrant for mishandling documents.

Previous cases in which such charges were pursued involve high-profile leaks about documents such as the Pentagon Papers about the Vietnam War, Wikileaks about State Department diplomatic cables or Edward Snowden’s release of information about National Security Agency surveillance.

But prosecuting those cases proved difficult. In the Pentagon Papers case, the government dropped its charges against Defense Department analyst Daniel Ellsberg and after a mistrial featuring disclosures about undisclosed wiretaps and a government-ordered breakin at his psychiatrist’s office. Snowden fled to Russia to avoid prosecution. The Justice Department seeks the extradition of Wikileaks leader Julian Assange from England.

When prosecuted, the cases can carry stiff penalties.

Chelsea Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for providing a trove of State Department cables to Wikileaks. President Barack Obama commuted the sentence after about six years.

Jeffrey Sterling, a former CIA officer, was sentenced to 42 months in prison for revealing classified information to a New York Times reporter about a covert operation providing false nuclear blueprints to Iran.

Stephen Jin-Woo Kim, a former State Department contract analyst, was sentenced to 13 months in prison for disclosing classified information to a Fox News reporter about North Korea’s nuclear program.

More: Trump’s relentless attacks on Mar-a-Lago search lack context. What he said vs. what we know.

But cases about mishandling documents have been pleaded down to lesser charges.

David Petraeus, a former Army general and CIA director, was fined $100,000 after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor for sharing classified documents with his biographer. Sandy Berger, a former national security adviser to President Bill Clinton, was fined $50,000 after pleading guilty to the same misdemeanor for sneaking classified documents out of the National Archives and destroying some copies of records.

“I would expect that any serious prosecutor will very much distinguish between the quantity of documents, the sensitive nature of documents, the use to which the documents were put,” Richman said. “What’s emerging is a story of utter contempt for government processes.”

Experts: DOJ ‘too soft’ with Trump

In Trump’s case, the National Archives notified him in a May 10 letter that more than 100 documents comprising 700 pages were retrieved in January from Mar-a-Lago with classification markings.

“There are important national security interests in the FBI and others in the Intelligence Community getting access to these materials,” acting Archivist of the United States Debra Steidel Wall said in a letter to Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran.

The letter revealed that Trump knew he had classified documents the archives sought months before the FBI search, which legal experts said could be used to illustrate criminal intent to allegedly mishandle documents.

Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. attorney and now a law professor at the University of Michigan, said the letter illustrated Trump hadn’t been cooperative with federal authorities and that his claims of executive privilege to keep the documents confidential were wrong.

“If anything, they’ve been too soft,” she said in a tweet.

Government demands for documents grew more urgent over time. Trump turned over the documents to the National Archives in January voluntarily, additional classified documents to federal authorities under subpoena June 3 and more documents – including 11 sets of classified records – under a search warrant Aug. 8.

Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor and president of West Coast Trial Lawyers in Los Angeles, said the months of exchanges revealed criminal intent because Trump knew he held records the government sought.

“They needed to be more robust and aggressive,” Rahmani said. “They really took this sort of white-glove approach with Trump.”

U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart authorized the search after the FBI notified him the January documents included 67 marked confidential, 92 marked “secret” and 25 marked “top secret.” That trove of documents included markings for clandestine human sources of intelligence, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, “NOFORN” information that can’t be released to foreign governments and “ORCON” information that can’t be released beyond pre-approved U.S. entities, according to the redacted FBI affidavit used to justify the search that was unsealed Friday.

Corcoran argued in a May 25 letter to Jay Bratt, the head of the counterintelligence section at the Justice Department, that Trump as president had “absolute authority to declassify documents.” Because of a president’s ultimate legal authority under the Constitution, Corcoran argued his actions dealing with classified documents “are not subject to criminal sanction.”

“Beyond that, the primary criminal statute that governs the unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents or material does not apply to the president,” Corcoran wrote.

But authorities have found no documentation Trump declassified the documents. Even if he had, the statutes cited in the search warrant deal with defense and government documents, not necessarily classified records.

Andrew Weissmann, lead prosecutor for special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and a law professor at New York University, said Trump’s claims the documents were declassified or protected under executive privilege could help prosecutors prove he knew holding the documents was wrong.

“The series of bogus defenses Trump is raising makes the criminal case against him only stronger and the discretionary factors in favor of DOJ deciding to proceed with prosecution that much weightier,” Weissmann said in a tweet.

Experts stress importance of keeping classified documents secret

While waiting for more details about the documents at stake, legal experts said the government must weigh whether prosecuting Trump would reveal more secrets.

McQuade, the former U.S. attorney, said before the release of the affidavit the government may be reluctant to file charges against Trump for fear of “graymail,” the risk of exposing secrets during litigation. Defendants, lawyers, the judge, jury and court staff review documents used as evidence at trial, she said.

“That possibility often causes members of the intelligence community to balk at the idea of criminal prosecution,” McQuade wrote Aug. 18.

Sharon Squassoni, who specialized in nuclear arms control and security policy while working at the State Department and is now a research professor at George Washington University, said Trump’s handling of classified documents sounded alarming.

“Dumping these documents in boxes for movers to take them is just very sloppy and reveals a lack of respect for procedures and security and worse, it reveals a misguided notion of power,” Squassoni said. “You can get people killed if that information falls into the wrong hands.”

But she said we won’t know the extent of the impact until learning more about what documents were at stake. A trial could reveal more about the documents that authorities want to keep secret.

“Finding out a little more runs the risk of further damage,” Squassoni said.

Richman also said pressing charges risks expose the secrets in the documents.

“If you charge an offense that requires proof about the nature of the material, you run the risk of disclosure of at least some aspect of those materials,” Richman said. “The government is wary of doing that.”

Inventing Anna: Ukrainian-Born Scammer Posed with Trump and Wandered Mar-a-Lago

August 2022

Inna Yashchyshyn, a self-confessed grifter linked to a fraudulent charity, posed as a member of one of the world’s most famous banking families, gained access to Donald Trump’s Florida home, and mingled with top Republicans.

Key Findings

  • Inna Yashchyshyn, alias Anna de Rothschild, was invited into Mar-a-Lago and posed as a member of the European banking dynasty.
  • Yashchyshyn is linked to a fake charity and other fraudulent ventures.
  • Her dealings are being investigated by law enforcement in both Canada and the U.S.
  • The revelations raise security concerns about how she was able to mix freely at Mar-a-Lago with the ex-president and other prominent political figures.

Anna de Rothschild blended in perfectly as she rolled through the gates at Mar-a-Lago. Bearing the name of European banking royalty, she flashed a Rolex on her wrist, drove a new Mercedes Benz AMG G63, and touted her connections to big real estate developments.

The rich and powerful she mingled with at the Florida resort, including close family and friends of the 45th president of the United States, seemed unaware that the confident 33-year-old with long, flowing locks was no Rothschild.

OCCRP and the The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette have learned that the woman who guests said posed as a Rothschild is actually Inna Yashchyshyn, a Russian-speaking immigrant born in Ukraine, daughter of a truck driver and the former director of a Miami charity called United Hearts of Mercy.

She is also under investigation by Canadian law enforcement, and the FBI is asking questions about her business dealings.

Her charity was kicked off payment processing platform Stripe after its experts found stolen credit card numbers from Hong Kong were used to route donations to the charity.

Yashchyshyn’s background and her motives for making her way to Mar-a-Lago, where she had her photo snapped alongside former President Donald J. Trump in May 2021, are still a mystery.

Adding an additional layer of intrigue, Yashchyshyn and her one-time business partner Valeriy Tarasenko have filed domestic violence injunctions against each other in South Florida. He claims she is a fraudster and predator who preyed on rich older men and abused his teenage daughter. She calls him a violent criminal who effectively held her hostage.

The fact that Yashchyshyn was apparently granted easy access to what Trump dubbed his Winter White House is more troubling when viewed against the backdrop of the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago on August 8 to seize classified government documents as part of a federal investigation.

Photos and videos from May 2021 obtained by the Post-Gazette and OCCRP show Yashchyshyn was quite convincing as an imposter Rothschild, a fact confirmed by interviews with multiple people who met her at the resort.

“It wasn’t just dropping the family name. She talked about vineyards and family estates and growing up in Monaco,” said John LeFevre, a former investment banker and author.

LeFevre described gathering with her with other guests around a club pool on May 1.

By the next day, Yashchyshyn had access to the former U.S. president, Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and other political luminaries Trump regularly attracts to his Florida home, the epicenter of today’s Republican Party.

Yashchyshyn said in sworn statements made as part of her U.S. court dispute with her former partner Tarasenko that she has never used another name and has not broken any laws. In an interview with the Post-Gazette, she said she did not know Anna de Rothschild.

“I think there is some misunderstanding,” she said.

Yashchyshyn said any passports or driver’s licenses with the Rothschild name and her photo had been fabricated by Tarasenko or his family.

“That’s all fake, and nothing happened,” she said.

OCCRP and the Post-Gazette sent detailed questions to Yashchyshyn and her lawyer Andrew J. Smallman. They declined to respond.

Rubbing Shoulders, Pitching Plans

The path that led Yashchyshyn to Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s side was years in the making. It saw her become involved with a fraudulent charity, make trips to the Caribbean, and woo various high rollers with would-be business ideas.

This undated photo obtained by OCCRP shows Inna Yashchyshyn (right) with the late Charles L. Ward (center), a luxury goods marketer and polo enthusiast from Texas who died in June 2021.

Among those she met along the way were the property developer Paul Barton and Trump supporter Elchanan “Elki” Adamker, the founder of a New York financial services company.

Barton said he was introduced to her by two real estate brokers, and knew her as Inna Yashchyshyn, and his family company paid for her to fly several times on private jets to a luxury project they were developing in the Bahamas. He said he offered her a chance to come in on a deal to sell properties in a sprawling development for $55 million and receive a commission, though in the end this never happened.

She told Barton she was involved in projects including a Formula One race track in Miami, a high-rise hotel in Monaco and a condo project in Montreal. She rubbed shoulders with the A-listers, appearing in photos with rapper and entrepreneur Ray J and Argentinian-born car engineer Horacio Pagani.

“We always thought her grandfather had the money and that he was an oligarch,” said Barton.

It was Adamker who invited Yashchyshyn to join him for a gathering at Mar-a-Lago, where she arrived in her 2021 Mercedes G-Wagon on May 1, 2021. He did not respond to requests for comment.

It is unclear whether she met that day with Trump, who was preparing to launch a golf fundraiser to raise money for the midterm elections.

The fundraiser was held the next day at Trump International Golf Club, a few miles from Mar-a-Lago. Trump posed with Yashchyshyn for several photos there. In one frame, she stood alongside Trump and Graham, all three smiling and gesturing with their thumbs up. Later, a guest joked with her that he would charge her a hefty fee for the photos.

“Anna, you’re a Rothschild — you can afford $1 million for a picture with you and Trump,” the man said in a video obtained by the Post-Gazette and OCCRP.

She then drove some of the guests back to Mar-a-Lago. There she was joined by others, including Adamker, Trump campaign donor Richard Kofoed, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of Donald Trump, Jr.

Several people at the gathering ended up having dinner at a nearby Italian restaurant. A group photo shows the woman they knew as Anna standing behind a seated Guilfoyle, hands on the back of her chair, and Kofoed standing nearby.

Kofoed declined to discuss Yashchyshyn. Trump Organization officials and campaign colleagues of Guilfoyle did not respond to requests for her to comment. Graham’s office declined to comment.

LeFevre and three other guests interviewed for this story said Yashchyshyn repeatedly told people she was a Rothschild, “and everyone was eating it up,” he said.

One frequent guest who organizes political events for Trump told the Post-Gazette, on the condition of anonymity, that the following week, Yashchyshyn was invited to a fundraiser for former Missouri governor Eric Greitens held in an oceanfront mansion near Mar-a-Lago owned by Trump.

Weeks earlier, Greitens — who was forced to resign from the governorship in 2018 after being accused of blackmailing a woman with a nude photo — had announced his Senate bid, appointing Guilfoyle as his national campaign chair.

Greitens signed four of his books for “Anna,” records and interviews show.

“For Anna,” he wrote in one, “Stay strong!!”

From Inna to Anna

It’s unclear exactly when Inna Yashchyshyn came to the U.S. and began using the name Anna de Rothschild.

She doesn’t have much of a public footprint, but has been a permanent U.S. resident for at least a decade, according to a lengthy deposition she herself recently offered in a U.S. court case. Her parents live in a Chicago suburb, and Yashchyshyn has spent time in the Montreal area as well as Miami.

Reporters have seen copies of fake U.S. and Canadian passports in the name of Anna de Rothschild bearing Yashchyshyn’s photograph, though she insists she had nothing to do with making them.

OCCRP and the Post-Gazette have learned that both the FBI’s office in Miami and the Sûreté du Québec provincial police in Canada have launched investigations that touch on her dealings.

The FBI refused to comment on whether Yashchyshyn was under investigation, but the Sûreté du Québec confirmed its major crimes unit launched an investigation into her in February. It said it could not provide additional details.

The FBI probe may involve a charity she led, United Hearts of Mercy. Three people who live in South Florida confirmed to OCCRP and the Post-Gazette that they’ve been interviewed by the FBI about her in the past seven months, and all said they were questioned about the charity, which also has a Canadian branch previously led by Tarasenko.

Founded in 2010 in Canada and 2015 in Miami, United Hearts of Mercy claims on its Facebook page to help “release children from spiritual, social, economic, and physical poverty” in Africa, the U.S., Canada, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.

Because the Miami charity claimed it was a small entity with revenues under $50,000, it didn’t have to publicly disclose the amount of money it took in and spent.

But United Hearts actually took in over $200,000 in 2020, according to its own internal documents.

The charity’s certified public accountant, Tatiana Verzilina, made a sworn statement in December 2021 that was turned over to the FBI, alleging that the charity was actually a source of illicit funds for organized crime.

Verzilina alleged in the statement, obtained by the Post-Gazette and OCCRP, that she helped set up the Stripe account for the charity, only to begin receiving “voice messages from unknown numbers with accents that if I do not return money, I and my family will be harmed and killed.” She said her family in Russia — where she is now living — received threats too.

Montreal condo complex

Credit: OCCRP Documents show the United Hearts of Mercy charity was co-founded in Canada in 2010 by Valeriy Tarasenko, with a listed address at this downtown Montreal condo complex, which is still home to relatives of his.

Via Facebook posts, the charity solicited donors to help get money to victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti in 2016, and to struggling families in the neighboring Dominican Republic. It’s not clear where the funds actually went. Similarly, at least $236,500 poured into the charity in just a few weeks after it launched a drive to raise money for families affected by Covid, records show. But it was soon cut off by payment processors over suspicions of fraud.

Stripe, Inc. determined that money flowing into the entity was generated from credit card numbers and bank accounts that were not authorized for use by the owners. Reporters from OCCRP emailed dozens of those pseudo-donors from Hong Kong, and every single email bounced back, suggesting they were fictitious or inactive email addresses employed to trick the payment processor.

Fundrazr.com, a payment platform for professional charities, confirmed to OCCRP that it shut down one of the charity’s funding drives, run under Verzilina’s name, from its site in April 2020 “after it failed internal fraud checks,” even before any money was collected.

Daryl Hatton of FundRazr said it booted United Hearts of Mercy because the charity’s lack of a convincing backstory, and the fact that some attempted donation amounts didn’t tally with how people would normally donate, raised suspicions.

“The story didn’t ring true,” he told OCCRP.

Nanny, or Not?

Yashchyshyn has admitted to working for Miami Mama, a controversial South Florida company that helped expectant Russian mothers give birth in the U.S. so they would gain citizenship, and as an “independent consultant” for Ambit Energy, a firm heavily fined in 2019 for defrauding customers.

She also forged close ties to Tarasenko, 44, a Moscow-raised businessman now working out of South Florida. In recent years, relations between Tarasenko and Yashchyshyn have soured, and they are currently embroiled in a bitter legal battle. She claims they were lovers; he denies it.

Tarasenko said he hired Yashchyshyn in 2014 as a nanny to care for his two daughters while he traveled on business. Yashchyshyn denied that, claiming in a court deposition that he had coerced her into wrangling funds from men she met “on the street or some restaurants or events or online.” These funds were then used, she said, to prop up their lifestyles.

“I would go on the dates, make a friendship, and Valeriy would take my phone and start contacting the guys from my phone and ask for the need for food, for pay the bills, ask for cash, you know,” she said.

The Post-Gazette and OCCRP talked to two men who confirmed they had been scammed out of thousands of dollars by Yashchyshyn. One of them was mentioned in the accountant’s statement shared with the FBI.

Embarrassed, the two men did not want their names used but confirmed they had lent her money that was never returned. One has confirmed he was interviewed by the FBI.

Tarasenko and Yashchyshyn were officers in at least two of the same companies in Florida. The Russian businessman, who was detained for carrying a police-style baton in a Moscow metro station in 1998, said he has met twice with FBI agents and discussed multiple trips Yashchyshyn made to Mar-a-Lago.

In February 2022, documents indicate Yashchyshyn resigned her positions at various Florida companies, including the U.S. wing of the United Hearts of Mercy.

She used “her fake identity as Anna de Rothschild to gain access to and build relationships with U.S. politicians[s], including but not limited to Donald Trump, Lindsey Graham, and Eric Greitens,” Tarasenko wrote in an affidavit filed on February 1 in Miami-Dade County. (An affidavit is a way to put something on the record when there is concern about potential litigation. It is not the same as a statement made under oath to the FBI or a prosecutor.)

Among those who have spoken to the FBI about Yashchyshyn is her ex-husband Sergey Golubev. A Russian-born U.S. citizen, Golubev said he wed Yashchyshyn in 2011 so she could get U.S. residency but it was a marriage only on paper.

“At some point, she needed a permanent green card,” Golubev, 48, told the Post-Gazette. He added that he was interviewed by the FBI in February and that agents asked about allegations of something “illegal — cheating people and stealing money.”

The ex-husband insisted he had lost touch with her after their 2016 divorce and was unaware of her activities since then.

‘She Shouldn’t Have Been There’

Mar-a-Lago is simultaneously Trump’s primary residence, a resort for paying members, and a place where the former president has hosted fundraisers and even entertained world leaders.

Experts said the way Yashchyshyn entered Mar-a-Lago, gaining access to Trump’s immediate family and prominent politicians, was deeply troubling.

“It highlights the complexities of having a former president living within a larger club,” said Charles Marino, a security consultant who once served on the Secret Service details of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Aerial View of Mar-a-Lago resort

Credit: MediaPunch Inc/Alamy Stock Photo An aerial view of Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, taken in March 2021.

National security officials always worry about spies and turncoats accessing classified and top-secret materials of the sort that were removed by the FBI from Mar-a-Lago in early August. A few years ago, two different Chinese women — one of them toting two passports and a thumb drive with malicious software — were arrested in separate instances after entering the Mar-a-Lago grounds while Trump was president.

The FBI reportedly took some documents from Trump’s private residence within the complex, which is heavily guarded by the Secret Service. But other papers recovered during the raid were said to have been in a basement area, which is flood-prone and on the north side of the complex, a less secure area.

The openness of Mar-a-Lago calls for a more comprehensive level of protection and deeper background checks, said Ed Martin, a former Treasury Department special agent.

“That’s his residence. She shouldn’t have been there” said Martin.

“The question is was it a fraud or an intelligence threat? The fact that we are asking this question is a problem.”

– Charles Marino, security consultant

Yashchyshyn drove into Mar-a-Lago multiple times. It’s unclear what identification she provided, if any, to Mar-a-Lago’s staff. The guest-services office there referred calls to the Trump Organization, and emails and voicemails to several executives there went unanswered.

A basic background check might have shown that her driver’s license bearing the Rothschild name appeared to be valid. But a more comprehensive check would have shown that no such person exists, said former Secret Service agent Ron T. Williams.

“To maintain the operational integrity of our work, we are unable to comment specifically concerning the means, methods or resources used to conduct our protective operations,” Steven Kopek, a Secret Service spokesman, said in a statement to OCCRP and the Post-Gazette. ”As it pertains to Mar-a-Lago, which is a private club, you will have to refer to organizers when it comes to who may have been allowed access to their facilities.”

It wasn’t until March 2022 that members of the Trump entourage appear to have discovered Yashchyshyn’s real identity.

Dean Lawrence, a Florida music promoter and exotic car leasing agent, said he met with Trump insiders at Mar-a-Lago, where he said he surprised them with the news. He knew Inna from her company Rothschild Media Label, which was promoting Tarasenko’s then-teenaged daughter, who uses “Sofiya Rothschild” as a stage name.

The evening started, he said, with a dinner that included the former president and the rappers Ray J and Kodak Black. Rudy Giuliani and former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik also attended, Lawrence said.

Later that evening he told Kofoed and Caroline Wren, a former national adviser for the Trump campaign, that Anna de Rothschild was an imposter. He recalled saying, “I want to clear something up with you. I want you to know that she has nothing to do with the Rothschilds. Don’t get involved in any kind of business with her.”

As he divulged the information to Kofoed, “his eyes were wide open,” said Lawrence. “He said to me, ‘That’s exactly who I met. She came to my house.’”

Lawrence was perplexed why he was the one who was telling Trump insiders about a potential breach and not the people guarding the former president and his family.

“What I’m trying to understand is how did they allow this?’’ he asked. “How could someone keep coming back — at that level? This is Mar-a-Lago.”

Marino said the sheer number of unanswered questions about the Anna de Rothschild affair was troubling.

“The question is was it a fraud or an intelligence threat? The fact that we are asking this question is a problem.” he said.

FBI probes Ukrainian-born ‘heiress’ who posed as Rothschild, gained access to Trump

AP22222858855929-1024x640.jpg

The FBI has launched an investigation into the business dealings of a Ukrainian-born woman who reportedly posed as a member of the Rothschild family, the famous Jewish international banking dynasty, and who appeared to have gained access to Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and to the former US president himself under false pretenses.

An investigative piece published Friday by the Organized Crime & Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) together with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette detailed how 33-year-old Inna Yashchyshyn, a Russian-speaking immigrant to the US born in Ukraine, presented herself as banking heiress “Anna de Rothschild” and inflitrated Trump’s Florida resort, mingling with guests at the private members’ club, posing for photos with Trump, US Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and others at Mar-a-Lago functions.

The estate is currently at the center of an FBI investigation into Trump’s unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents, some of them top secret, at the property.

According to the joint report, Yashchyshyn is the daughter of an Illinois truck driver and it is unclear when she arrived in the US. Reporters of the publications posted photos of fake US and Canadian passports in the name of Anna de Rothschild bearing Yashchyshyn’s photograph, though she has denied involvement.

The FBI office in Miami and the Sûreté du Québec provincial police in Canada have launched investigations into Yashchyshyn’s dealings, specifically in relation to a charity called United Hearts of Mercy, first founded in Montreal, Canada by Moscow businessman Valery Tarasenko in 2010 with a branch in Miami in 2015. The charity claimed it helps lift children “from spiritual, social, economic, and physical poverty” in various parts of the world, the report said.

Yashchyshyn and Tarasenko are engaged in a complex, bitter legal dispute and have filed domestic violence injunctions in Florida against each other. Yashchyshyn claimed she and Tarasenko were in a relationship and that he coerced her into a scheme to wrangle funds from various mean, accusations Tarasenko denies.

This dispute appears to have revealed details about Yashchyshyn’s access to Mar-a-Lago in May 2021 for unclear reasons, according to the report.

An affidavit filed in Miami by Tarasenko in February, and cited in the report, said Yashchyshyn used “her fake identity as Anna de Rothschild to gain access to and build relationships with U.S. politicians[s], including but not limited to Donald Trump, Lindsey Graham, and Eric Greitens,” in reference to the former Missouri governor.

According to the report, Yashchyshyn played an imposter Rothschild convincingly, according to guests who met her at the estate.

“It wasn’t just dropping the family name. She talked about vineyards and family estates and growing up in Monaco,” John LeFevre, a former investment banker and author who was at Mar-a-Lago in May 2021, told the publications.

She arrived around May 1 last year at the invitation of a connection she met through the charity, the report said. The next day, she was invited to a fundraiser at the Trump International Golf Club, near Mar-a-Lago, where she posed for pictures with Trump, Graham, and others. Later that day, she reportedly fraternized with a number of Trump associates, including Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of Donald Trump, Jr, and dined with them.

A photo obtained by the publications showed a group of people posing for the image at a restaurant including Yashchyshyn, standing behind a seated Guilfoyle.

The incident raises questions about access to Mar-a-Lago, which is both Trump’s residence and a private members club.

Charles Marino, a security consultant who once served on the Secret Service details of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, told the publications that the possible breach “highlights the complexities of having a former president living within a larger club.”

“The question is was it a fraud or an intelligence threat? The fact that we are asking this question is a problem,” added Marino

The FBI launched an unprecedented raid of Trump’s palatial Florida home earlier this month under the authority of the Justice Department, which is investigating potential violations of multiple laws, including an Espionage Act statute that governs gathering, transmitting or losing national defense information. The other laws deal with the mutilation and removal of records as well as the destruction, alteration or falsification of records in federal investigations.

On Friday, the FBI released an affidavit indicating that the raid was triggered by a review of 15 boxes of records previously surrendered by the former president that contained top secret information — including about human intelligence sources.

According to the affidavit, the FBI opened the investigation after the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) received 15 boxes of records in January 2022 that had been improperly removed from the White House and taken to Mar-a-Lago. It said sensitive National Defense Information was among the records recovered including 67 documents marked as confidential, 92 as secret and 25 as top secret
