The gathering political storm in America

horizon_storm_1.jpg?w=1280

A student once asked me, “Is this the most divided we’ve ever been as a country?”

“You know, we did once have a civil war,” I felt compelled to respond. “It’s estimated that three quarters of a million Americans died as a result of the Civil War, many from disease and starvation.

“But,” I added, “this is probably the most divided the country has been since the Civil War.” In fact, half of all Americans say they expect a new civil war “in the next few years.” It won’t be sectional (imagine New York and California at war with Texas and Florida). Nor would it be an economic class war (many working class voters today are conservative Republicans).

It’s a cultural division.

Its origins date back to the 1960s, when the Democrats embraced the civil rights movement and set off a massive voter realignment.

Let me give you my favorite statistic from U.S. political history.

In the 1968 election, Mississippi was Republican Richard Nixon’s worst state: He got less than 14 percent of the vote. George Wallace got over 63 percent. Four years later, in 1972, Mississippi was Nixon’s best state: He got more than 78 percent of the vote. See what happened? Nixon used his “southern strategy” — appealing to white racial backlash voters — to fold the Wallace vote into the Republican vote… where it’s been ever since.

And it’s not just southern whites.

A lot of northern urban ethnic whites — who used to be called “Archie Bunker voters” — were also folded into the GOP.

The result has been to invert the class division in American politics. In the 1930s, class differences were at the heart of politics. It was the culmination of an era of epochal labor strife (sit-down strikes, lockouts, union-busting). The U.S. had the most violent labor history of any industrial country — not the most radical, but the most violent. In those days, the question that worked best to define a voter’s politics would have been, “Do you sympathize more with business or more with labor?”

Beginning in the 1960s, class conflict has given way to cultural conflict.

Today, the questions that work best to define a voter’s politics (besides race) would be, “How often do you go to church?” and “Do you have a college degree?”

Education and religiosity define a voter’s culture — liberal or conservative.

It has long been the case that the wealthier you are, the more likely you are to vote Republican. That is still true, though not as much as it used to be. In the 2020 election, support for Trump came from 44 percent of the voters with family incomes below $50,000 and from 54 percent of those with family incomes of $100,000 or more.

What’s new is “the diploma divide.” Today, the better educated you are, the more likely you are to vote Democratic. White voters with a college degree voted 51 percent for Joe Biden in 2020; non-college whites voted 67 percent for Donald Trump.

What happens among voters who are both wealthy and well educated? They’re cross-pressured. Their conservative interests pull them to vote Republican. Their liberal values pull them to vote Democratic. That’s why, under Trump, Republicans have been losing so many wealthy white suburban voters. He offends their values. To many college-educated Republicans, Donald Trump is an embarrassment.

In a July New York Times-Siena College poll, Trump’s support drops from 58 percent among non-college Republicans to 28 percent among Republicans with a college degree. The split is painfully evident in this year’s Republican primaries between establishment conservatives and MAGA insurgents.

Consider this: In the 2020 election, Biden carried every one of the ten best-educated states in the U.S. One of them is Virginia, the only southern state that voted for Biden. Trump carried eight of the ten least-educated states. The exceptions: New Mexico and Nevada, which have large Latino populations. The least-educated state is — surprise! — not Mississippi: It’s West Virginia, a state that’s 94 percent white… and voted 69 percent for Donald Trump.

Religion has also become a critical source of division — not what faith you belong to, but how religious you are. Regular churchgoers vote much more Republican than non-churchgoers, at least among whites. Trump’s strongest support comes from white evangelicals.

I once asked a religious right activist why a man like Donald Trump, who has few evident religious convictions, was so popular with religious voters.

“Because he delivers,” he answered.

“What has he delivered?” I asked.

His response: “What we have been praying for for 50 years: the Supreme Court of the United States.”

Differences based on religion, race and education are not simply differences of interest, like business versus labor. They are differences of values and identity. Differences of interest can be negotiated and compromised. Differences of values and identity cannot.

Merrick Garland’s complicated Trump prosecution calculus Republicans, Latino voters and an eye on Nevada

In segregated southern schools like the ones I attended, it used to be fashionable to teach that the Civil War was really fought over tariffs — i.e., a conflict of interests (the high-tariff industrializing North against the low-tariff agricultural South). That was nonsense, of course. The real issue was slavery, a conflict of values. Compromise over slavery, like the one famously embedded in the original U.S. Constitution, was ridiculous.

Conflicts over identity and values today are no less intractable.

Organised crime helps Russia beat sanctions, experts warn

Experts warned that the Kremlin could 'nationalise' organised crime in order to bring in currencyExperts warned that the Kremlin could ‘nationalise’ organised crime in order to bring in currency (Image: Getty)

Of particular concern is the smuggling of weapons and electronics, such as microchips and vehicle components, across Ukraine’s porous eastern border. One expert last night warned that an increasingly desperate Vladimir Putin may even create a Russian “Bureau 39”, emulating a North Korean government agency that uses state resources to forge currency and sell drugs.

It is thought to net between £500million and £1billion in hard currency for the pariah totalitarian state.

Organised crime has been flourishing in the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk since Moscow’s 2014 invasion of its neighbour.

In Crimea, the Bashmaki and Salem crime groups were instrumental in assisting Russia’s annexation of the peninsula. Puppet leader Sergey Aksenov was named by Ukrainian authorities as a middle-ranking member of Salem in the mid-1990s.

Recalling a visit to Ukraine in 2020, former South African intelligence officer Tony Schiena, who now heads Mosaic crisis management firm, said: “Our American client hired us as he was concerned about the people he was dealing with.

“The investigation led us from an armsdealing conference in Kyiv to a forest in eastern Ukraine where opened trunks of vehicles would reveal automatic weapons with silencers.

“We had to direct our client out of various deals that he was intending to make; a complex system of financial transactions and acquisitions that would span Ukraine, Poland, Croatia and Israel.”

While Russia’s invasion hindered smuggling operations, it did not stop them. The end of hostilities will, experts warn, lead to several years in which crime groups will continue to flourish.

Dr Mark Galeotti, of the Council on Geostrategy think tank, said: “A third of all heroin used to be trafficked along the northern route. Now it’s a sixth but the chains between Ukrainian and Russian organised crime groups have not broken and things have started to move.

“There is no question that Russia, with a track record of using organised crime, is seeking to undermine sanctions.”

He added: “Russia has captured a number of Javelin missiles but we also know that they’ve bought some. Crime groups can offer to secure anything that is man portable. This is what initially deterred the US and UK from sending sophisticated kit.”

Even before the Russian invasion, there were some 400,000 illegal weapons circulating in Ukraine, according to official estimates.

Dr Galeotti warned that the Kremlin could “nationalise” organised crime in order to bring in currency.

He said: “As Russia moves further into a war-fighting economy, the temptation to deploy a North Korean-style Bureau 39 route and begin to effectively nationalise organised crime will become stronger.”

Former FBI official likens Matt Gaetz, Roger Stone, and Trump to the Mafia: ‘It’s a criminal organization’

62e898f160b200001871e52b?width=1200&form

A former FBI official on Monday likened the Trumpworld figures Rep. Matt Gaetz and Roger Stone, as well as former President Donald Trump, to the Mafia.

Frank Figliuzzi, a former assistant director for counterintelligence at the FBI, weighed in on MSNBC regarding The Washington Post’s recent reporting of a hot-mic conversation between Gaetz and Stone.

In the tape from 2019, Gaetz was heard reassuring Stone that “the boss” — presumably a reference to Trump — would still offer Stone a presidential pardon.

Figliuzzi also noted how Stone, a longtime Trump associate, had said he was looking to Gaetz and “dozens of others” to help him escape his legal troubles.

“It’s a much larger conspiracy than I think even those of us who followed it every day could have imagined,” Figliuzzi said.

Figliuzzi also said the conversations between Gaetz and Stone echoed a “we’re all in this together” mentality that Trumpworld seemed to function on.

“You know, La Cosa Nostra, the Italian Mafia, translates as, ‘This Thing of Ours,'” he said. “That’s all I keep hearing here: ‘We’re all in this together.'”

Figliuzzi added that the wiretaps of mobsters’ conversations that he’d heard in the past sounded “just like” Gaetz and Stone’s discussions.

“And they’re part of a criminal enterprise,” he said. “It’s a criminal organization. They know it. They know they’re screwed with regard to legality, and they know the only way out is for the boss to get them out of it.”

Gaetz and Stone were talking about Stone’s trial in 2019, which followed Stone’s indictment on one count of obstruction, five counts of making false statements to the FBI and congressional investigators, and one count of witness tampering in the special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

In the hot-mic recording, Stone was also heard telling Gaetz that he might have to “appeal to the big man” because most jurors surveyed for his trial despised him.

Gaetz was then heard agreeing with Stone, saying Stone was “fucked” where the trial was concerned. The congressman added, however, that he believed Stone wouldn’t go to prison because the “big guy” would not let that happen.

Stone was found guilty in November 2019 and sentenced to 40 months in prison. Trump, however, commuted Stone’s sentence in July 2020.

Gaetz has been the subject of a sex-trafficking investigation that kicked off the early last year. The FBI and the Justice Department have been looking into whether Gaetz broke sex-trafficking laws and had sex with a minor. The congressman has denied all wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime.

Representatives for Gaetz, Stone, and Trump’s postpresidential press office didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Foreign Intelligence Service reveals original 1930s Enigma machine

An original 1930s German Enigma machine kept hidden in the shadows by Poland’s Foreign Intelligence Agency has been thrust into public view after being donated to the Enigma Cipher Centre in Poznań.

Dating from 1937, the machine with the model number A7874 was used by the Third Reich’s military and special forces and would have been the same model the Polish cryptologists faced when working on trying to break the infamous code.

The Enigma Cipher Centre, whose opening last year is currently nominated in a public vote for ‘Historical Event of the Year 2021’, tells the detailed story of the Polish mathematicians who were instrumental in helping to crack the Enigma code, an act which is widely argued to have helped to shorten WWII by two years.

nucua8i229dr7jek71obf.jpegIt is reported that the Foreign Intelligence Service received the machine as a gift from the secret services of an allied country in recognition of the aid provided.Łukasz Gdak / PCD

The mathematicians worked as part of the Polish Army’s Cipher Bureau, set up in 1931 and headed by Major Gwido Langer and his deputy, Captain Maksymilian Ciężki.

The Bureau was a successor of the earlier, highly regarded Cipher section of the Polish Army, formed in 1919, which was successful in intercepting messages encrypted by the Russians in the Polish-Bolshevik War between 1919-1920.

qv5qw5wjv4im5i6dajnjd.jpegIn the first half of the 1930s, mathematicians (L-R) Henryk Zygalski, Jerzy Różycki and Marian Rejewski managed to break German messages encrypted using the Enigma machine.PAP

The evolution of the new Cipher Bureau in the 1930s into a team that broke Enigma, lay in Ciężki’s belief that the key to codebreaking lay not in linguistics, but in mathematics.

Having taught a secret course on cryptology at the University of Poznań, Ciężki made the decision to recruit three of its brightest young mathematicians, Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski and Jerzy Rόżycki, a decision which would prove fortuitous.

Between 1932 – 1938, the three mathematicians worked together in Poznań and then Warsaw on deciphering messages encrypted by Enigma machines.

On the 26th July 1939, Major Maksymilian called a meeting with French and British counterparts at Pyry Forest outside Warsaw, in which he, Rejewski, Zygalski and Rόżycki revealed that they had been reading German signals transmitted by Enigma machines since 1933.

They also revealed how they had been doing it which formed the basis for further work and breakthroughs at Bletchley Park in Britain.

The A7874 Enigma machine marks a major addition to the display at the Enigma Cipher Centre, which until now, had also displayed a civilian model of the Enigma machine and a Polish replica of the German machine.

Mariusz Wiśniewski, Vice-President of the City of Poznań said at the presentation ceremony of the machine, “The mission of the Centre [Enigma Cipher Centre] is above all to cultivate memory and remind people of the contribution of Poles and the roles of Poznań in the breaking of the German coding machine.

“This is the fundamental aim, that we are fulfilling since September last year when the Enigma Cipher Centre officially began its operations.

“One of the elements of our activities is to rotate the presence of exhibits connected with the history of Enigma.”

On loan from the Foreign Intelligence Agency, the original military Enigma machine will be on display until the end of 2022.

Lightning strike near White House injures 4 Thursday evening, officials say
Four people were struck by lightning Thursday evening and are hospitalized with critical life-threatening injuries, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.

The lone survivor of a lightning strike that killed three people near the White House on Thursday night is a 28-year-old woman from Newbury Park.

Amber Escudero-Kontostathis is in stable condition in a Washington, D.C.-area hospital after being revived on-site by a defibrillator used by the U.S. Secret Service, according to her mother.

“The Secret Service men saved her,” said Julie Escudero. “I’ve been trying to find out their names so I can personally thank them. They revived her.”

Escudero-Kontostathis was working for Threshold Giving, a nonprofit advocacy group for refugees, on her 28th birthday in Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. when she was caught in a thunderstorm.

She was among a group of people seeking refuge from the rain in a grove of trees when it was struck by a powerful series of lightning strikes.

“There were six lightning bolts that hit that spot within a half of a second,” Escudero said.

Lightning analyst Chris Vagasky told the Washington Post that there was a “six-stroke flash near the White House that hit the same point on the ground” at 6:49 p.m.

The location of the strike meant that there were already first responders on scene, said Vito Maggiolo, a spokesperson for the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department.

“The U.S Secret Service uniform division and U.S. Park Police both witnessed the strike and immediately began rendering medical aid to the four victims,” Maggiolo said. “We had a very robust initial response.”

A doctor vacationing from Germany and two medics from Texas were also among the strike’s witnesses who rushed to help, according to Escudero-Kontostathis’ family.

“Luckily, there were enough people in the vicinity that had medical experience,” said her father, Bob Escudero. “There were a lot of people in the right place at the right time to do what they could.”

Four victims suffered critical injuries and were taken to area hospitals, according to Maggiolo.

What happened: 3 dead, 1 injured in lightning strike near White House

Donna Mueller, 75, and James Mueller, 76, a couple from Janesville, Wisconsin, celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary, and Brooks A. Lambertson, 29, a Los Angeles bank employee, have been identified among the dead, according to authorities.

Escudero-Kontostathis suffered burns down the left side of her body, near where she held the bag carrying her electronic devices, and was initially too weak to walk, according to her parents.

But she was strong enough to come off the respirator on Friday and was moved from the intensive care unit to the burn center on Saturday, when she took her first steps since the strike.

“The trauma doctor came up yesterday and said she’s an ‘absolute miracle,’” said Julie Escudero, who believes the Dr. Martens boots her daughter wore, with thick rubber soles, contributed to her survival.

The Escudero family, who still live in Newbury Park, rushed to Washington, D.C. to support their daughter and her husband.

“I’m pretty confident that my daughter is going to be walking out of this hospital,” Julie Escudero said.

Family friends Alison Dobner and Malena Murray have organized a GoFundMe page to help Escudero-Kontostathis with medical costs. The fund had surpassed $19,000 as of Saturday afternoon.

Escudero-Kontostathis is a 2012 graduate of Newbury Park High, where she played soccer and golf.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Pepperdine University and is scheduled to start a master’s degree program at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies next month.

“That is her dream school,” Escudero said.

Escudero-Kontostathis was drawn to the nation’s capital by her passion for human rights. Her work with Threshold Giving helps support the International Rescue Committee, the humanitarian organization founded by Albert Einstein.

“She was always concerned with human rights,” said Bob Escudero. “It’s almost like she wants to jump out of bed and get back to work.”
